MLB Player Props for Tuesday, May 28
The 2024 MLB season is in full swing and we continue to come at it from a bunch of different directions. This season, VSiN Managing Editor Adam Burke will have you covered when it comes to MLB sides and totals in his daily best bets column. You’ll also get some First Five Inning analysis from Jonathan Von Tobel. On top of that, our analytics guru Steve Makinen will feed you some interesting trends and systems on a daily basis. But I’ll be focusing specifically on MLB player props this season, dishing out at least three per day every Monday to Friday. With that in mind, let’s get into the plays for Tuesday, May 28th.

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds – 6:40 pm ET
Kyle Gibson isn’t pitching all that well coming into this start, but he has had at least five strikeouts in four of his 10 starts this season. Now, Gibson gets a shot at a Reds team that is miserable at making contact against right-handed pitching. So, even though Gibson’s strikeout rate is just 18.7% this season, I think it’s fair to expect at least five strikeouts against a Reds team that has the second-highest strikeout rate (27.4%) in the league against righties. Gibson has also been a little more locked in when pitching on the road this season, so he shouldn’t be too uncomfortable in Cincinnati. After all, the last time he pitched here was back in 2022, when he struck out 11 hitters over 6.0 innings and gave up only three earned in a win.
Pick: Gibson Over 4.5 Strikeouts (-120 – 1.5 units)
Detroit Tigers at Pittsburgh Pirates – 6:40 pm ET
Jared Jones has cooled down a bit after a scorching hot start to the season, but he’s still a guy that is missing a lot of bats. The 22-year-old has struck out at least seven batters in seven of his 10 trips to the hill this season. And overall, his 29.4% strikeout rate is just absolutely tremendous. With that in mind, it’s really hard not to like the plus-money odds on Jones to strike out seven hitters against the Tigers tonight. This season, Detroit has the ninth-highest strikeout rate (23.8%) in the league against righties. And that number would probably be a bit higher if not for a May in which the Tigers have been a little better about making contact. But overall, I think Jones’ slider is going to cause some serious problems for this Detroit lineup.
Pick: Jones Over 6.5 Strikeouts (+120)
Cleveland Guardians at Colorado Rockies – 8:40 pm ET
I took Jose Ramirez to go Over 2.5 hits, runs and RBIs yesterday. The slugger responded by going 2 for 5 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run scored. Ramirez has now gone tonight’s total in five of his last six games. With that in mind, I’m simply riding the hot hand in yet another great matchup. Ramirez, who has always crushed right-handed pitching, will be going up against righty Ryan Feltner tonight. Feltner is just 1-4 with a 5.07 ERA this season, and the 27-year-old has given up at least five earned runs in three of his last seven starts. This game will also be played at Coors Field, which is obviously the most hitter-friendly environment in baseball. That said, I don’t see any reason Ramirez can’t continue to do damage at the plate.
Pick: Ramirez Over 2.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs (-110 – 1.5 units)
