Here are our favorite MLB prop bets for Sunday, May 21st:
New York Yankees (-140, 9) at Cincinnati Reds
Luis Severino was 7-3 with a 3.18 ERA last season, but this is going to be his first start of the year. And the righty only pitched 6.2 innings in the minors to get himself ready for this outing. With that in mind, I’m expecting a good amount of rust from the 29-year-old. Meanwhile, Cincinnati is sending Hunter Greene to the mound in this one. Greene has had an up-and-down 2023 season thus far, but he has electric stuff and has been a lot more effective when pitching in the afternoons. Overall, I just think it’s far more likely that the Yankees struggle to hit Greene. This New York offense has been pitiful this season, and Greene can miss a lot of bats in this spot. Cincinnati’s offense also happens to be a bit underrated.
Bet: Reds ML (+120)
Oakland Athletics at Houston Astros (-340, 8.5)
After he gave up 18 earned runs over three starts to open the season, the Athletics threw James Kaprielian in the bullpen for a couple of weeks. He then started two games in the minors and got his groove back a bit. After that, the Athletics called him back up and Kaprielian pitched 7.0 innings of three-run ball against the Texas Rangers on Saturday, May 13th. It was a big improvement from the righty, who is still 0-3 with a 10.17 ERA this season. But it does say something that Kaprielian gave up three earned runs in his best start of the year. And the righty now faces an Astros offense that can still be very dangerous. That’s why we’re turning to Kaprielian to give up at least three earned runs against Houston. The 29-year-old has also been lousy on the road to start the year, so it doesn’t help that this is at Minute Maid Park.
Bet: Kaprielian Over 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-145)
Miami Marlins at San Francisco Giants (-130, 8)
It’s hard not to like the Marlins as an underdog on Sunday. For starters, San Francisco has Alex Wood on the mound in this one. The lefty has been solid to start the season, but he hasn’t yet thrown five full innings in a single outing this year. On top of that, the Marlins are 10th in the league in wRC+ against left-handed pitching, so this is a completely different offense against southpaws. Meanwhile, Jesus Luzardo will be out there for Miami here. Luzardo is 3-2 with a 3.16 ERA this season, and he now faces a Giants team that is 27th in the league in wRC+ this year. San Francisco just can’t hit lefties and that makes Miami a live ‘dog in this spot. We absolutely love this play.
Bet: Marlins ML (+110)
