Giants at Mets Side Analysis

The final game of the MLB’s Sunday slate sees Tylor Megill and the Mets taking on Ross Stripling and the Giants in San Francisco. Megill is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 17 strikeouts this season, which looks a heck of a lot better than Stripling’s 0-1 record and 7.30 ERA. However, Stripling is likely going to turn his season around soon, and the Giants won’t be expecting many innings from him here. San Francisco will just be hoping that the righty can give his team four or five innings of solid ball, then he can hand things off to the bullpen — which has struggled to start the season.

That all might make it seem like the Mets are the right pick in this game, but it’s hard to say that. Megill’s counting stats tell a different story than his advanced numbers. In fact, the righty has gotten very lucky to start the 2023 season. Megill has always been a guy that has had a high barrel percentage and hard hit rate. It just hasn’t quite caught up to him yet. But that could all change here. San Francisco is fourth in the league in wRC+ against right-handed pitching, The Giants are also fourth in slugging and OPS against righties, while also being third in isolated power. With that said, this San Francisco team is dangerous against right-handed pitching, and that should spell trouble for Megill.

All in all, this game is somewhat tough to call, but it’s hard not to lean in favor of the home team here. Neither one of these starting pitching options is perfect, but the possibility of San Francisco’s bats getting hot is too hard to ignore. Also, the last time Stripling started a game against the Mets, he pitched 5.0 innings of one-run ball and struck out six batters. So, he might be looking forward to this matchup, although that last start was in 2021.

Giants at Mets Total Analysis

This is a game in which you might want to lay off the total, but the over is probably the right call if you need to play something. There’s potential for the Giants to hang a big number on Megill here, as guys like Michael Conforto, Mike Yastrzemski and Brandon Crawford are suddenly bigger threats at the plate against right-handed pitching.

On the other side, Stripling might like this matchup, but he just doesn’t work deep enough into games to warrant playing an under. He should give up a little something to this Mets lineup, and then he’ll be hoping that a mediocre bullpen can cover for him.

The over also happens to be 45-30 when the Mets are coming off back-to-back road games since the start of last season.

Giants at Mets Best Bet

The Giants have had their struggles this season, but they still hit righties hard. They should tee off against Megill, who has been lucky not to get shelled at any point this season. He gives up a lot of hard contact and that should come back to bite him against this Giants lineup.

Pick: Giants ML (-105)
