Tuley: Friday MLB Best Bets, plus early take on Saturday’s USFL title game

Thursday Best Bet Results

Thursday was a mixture of joy and regret in the Tuley’ Takes home office.
A lot of the joy was sharing the NFL Betting Guide with our VSiN subscribers as we’re so excited about the upcoming football season. It’ll be here before we know it and the early release of the NFL Betting Guide is a prime example of that.
Thursday was also full of day baseball on getaway day, though I kept having regrets as underdogs won the first 3 games of the day and 4-1 before the night games started, so I felt like I missed out on some winning tickets.

Top MLB Resources:

As it was, I lost my supposed Best Bet of the day on the Pirates First 5 Innings +150 vs. the Padres as San Diego jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning and dealt us the loss at 4-1 after 5 innings, though we still came out ahead as the Pirates rallied to win the game 5-4 (and we hope those readers who are still with us despite our recent slump also played it that way).
We did easily win our secondary Best Bet on the Astros First 5 Innings -110 at the Cardinals (hope followers got in early as I saw it close as high as -130) as Houston scored 6 runs in their top of the second to lead 6-0 after 5 innings and coast to blow out St. Louis in a 14-0 shutout.
So, we hope everyone had a profitable day.
Let’s look for more live dogs on Friday as we have 2 more MLB First 5 plays.
Note: as I wrote the last 4 days, I don’t have an official play yet on the USFL Championship Game on Saturday. As we discussed with VSiN colleague Greg Peterson on “The Greg Peterson Experience” show on Sunday night, the Birmingham Stallions opened as 6-point favorites over the Pittsburgh Maulers. I wanted to play the underdog but was hoping the line would be at least 7. I also wrote “I fully expect to get that later in the week as the public will probably be looking to bet the Stallions as the defending champions, plus anyone cashing on them as the chalk in their rout on Sunday won’t be deterred from betting them again at any price.” While some books went to Birmingham -6.5 on Monday, Circa Sports went to 7 and most books have followed suit. I saw a +7.5 on Tuesday, but there was a -125 attached, so we continued to wait. On Wednesday, Circa and some other books have gone to 7.5 but the majority of bets are still coming in on the Stallions, so we’re still waiting to lock in our official play, though I wouldn’t blame anyone that wants to grab the +7.5 now.

MLB Friday Best Bets

Reds First 5 Innings +110 vs. Padres: This is another play against the Padres, who are still scuffling with 5 straight losses. Now, I know I lost against them yesterday in the First 5 before winning the full-game money line, but I still don’t think they should be favored by this much over the Reds, who are a lot of fun to watch, led by Elly De La Cruz.

Diamondbacks First 5 +135 at Angels: The Diamondbacks are another surprise team this season and fun to back, especially when being a juicy overlay like this. The pitching matchup is pretty much a toss-up with Tommy Henry (4-1, 4.31 ERA) vs. Griffin Canning (6-2, 3.99 ERA). You just don’t know what you’re gonna get from the Angels’ offense as the D-backs have been more consistent. Arizona averages 5.12 runs to 5.00 for LA, but remember the Angels’ average is skewed a little by the 25 runs they put up last week vs. the Rockies.
