On Tuesday, August 11, the NBA unveiled its Opening Night and Christmas Day slates. It’s clear the league has some favorites right now, including LeBron James’ Philadelphia 76ers, the defending champion New York Knicks, and young Western Conference rivals like the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder. Either way, NBA fans and bettors have some awesome matchups to digest on October 20 and December 25. We’ll dive into all of them below.
NBA Opening Night Games
Detroit Pistons at Boston Celtics
The NBA season begins with an absolute banger, as the new-look Celtics take on last year’s top-seeded Pistons. With Boston having moved on from Jaylen Brown, many people have doubts about the roster Brad Stevens has assembled for the 2026-27 season. Well, this roster will be tested right from the jump, and it’ll happen against a Detroit team that also had a turbulent offseason.
Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks
Best of luck trying to get tickets to this one. Seriously, does it get any bigger than this? The Knicks will receive their championship rings at Madison Square Garden, where they’ll be hosting a 76ers team that suddenly has Brown and LeBron. This will be a battle in which a team that flashed more connectivity and chemistry than anyone in last year’s playoffs will be taking on superstars that have been thrown together. If Philadelphia comes out and wins this one, that’d be quite the statement.
Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs
We won’t have to wait long for another chapter in the top rivalry in the sport. The Thunder and Spurs, two teams that should sit atop the Western Conference for a very long time, will clash to open the season. That means we’ll get an early look at San Antonio with Tobias Harris, who comes over after a tremendous postseason with Detroit. We’ll also see what Chet Holmgren’s summer of work will mean as he looks to find ways to stay productive against Victor Wembanyama. Meanwhile, Wembanyama will have his sights set on something bigger. He’s out for an NBA title, and he’d love to edge out Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for the MVP award along the way.
NBA Christmas Day Games
San Antonio Spurs at New York Knicks
In a rematch of last year’s NBA Finals, the Spurs and Knicks will meet to kickstart Christmas Day. I’m interested in seeing what the Spurs get out of De’Aaron Fox in this one. Fox, who was dealing with an ankle injury in the NBA Finals, was miserable for San Antonio in the postseason. Assuming he’s healthy, will he be part of the solution as the Spurs look to conquer the league’s best teams? Also, will San Antonio’s young nucleus being a year older help the team handle a mature New York group? We probably won’t learn what we need to learn until next year’s playoffs, but this should be a fun game to analyze.
Miami Heat at Boston Celtics
Giannis Antetokounmpo could have ended up with the Celtics, but Boston wasn’t willing to part with the young pieces required to get the deal done. Ultimately, that ended up with Antetokounmpo landing with Miami — and it also resulted in Brown and LeBron going to Philadelphia. The Celtics will have to see the Greek Freak in a Heat jersey on Christmas Day, and that should make for some juicy drama. However, it should also be a tremendous basketball game. The Celtics still look like a better team than the Heat.
Philadelphia 76ers at Los Angeles Lakers
LeBron’s heading to Los Angeles for Christmas Day. After delivering a title to the Lakers organization, the relationship soured a bit in LeBron’s final years with the franchise. That factored into the 41-year-old making the decision to bail in free agency. LeBron ultimately ended up with a talented 76ers team, and he’ll surely be hoping to lead his new crew to a win over the Lakers. However, Luka Doncic has a talented team around him, and Los Angeles will be eager to show LeBron he made a mistake — even if the parting of ways was somewhat mutual.
Oklahoma City Thunder at Minnesota Timberwolves
In many ways, these teams used to be similar. Oklahoma City was undoubtedly a better version of Minnesota, but both teams had elite defenses and heliocentric superstars. Well, the Timberwolves are no longer a defensive-minded team. Sure, Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert are fantastic defensively, but having Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball means being a high-octane team that thrives offensively. All of that will make this matchup interesting, as this will be a new-look Minnesota squad hosting a powerhouse Oklahoma City group.
Denver Nuggets at Golden State Warriors
This is probably the strangest game on the Christmas Day slate, but it’s understandable that the NBA decided to throw these teams out there. Nikola Jokic and Steph Curry deserve to be on the national stage, as they’re two of the greatest players ever — and the Joker is still arguably the best player in the league. However, it isn’t crazy to think that Golden State will struggle this year, so this one could easily end up lacking the shine of the other four. Either way, I’ll be tuned in and ready to analyze it when the time comes.
