Falcons sign Cousins to four-year deal

It only took a few hours into the official start of NFL free agency for Kirk Cousins to come to an agreement with the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons sign Cousins coming off of a torn Achilles, but the obvious missing piece in that offense with Bijan Robinson, Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and others was a quarterback. That gaping hole has now been filled.

Atlanta Falcons Super Bowl LIX Odds

The Falcons Super Bowl LIX odds had been moving down throughout the offseason to begin with, but they opened the day on March 11 at 35/1 and were immediately chopped down to 28/1, as life in the NFC South doesn’t appear to be all that daunting again this season.

The Buccaneers did re-sign Baker Mayfield coming off of their NFC South-winning season and trip to the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs, but the Falcons are now the favorites to take the division crown at -110. That price has also been dropping throughout the offseason.

    Kirk Cousins stats

Cousins has spent the last six seasons in Minnesota, where he threw for over 23,000 yards and had 171 touchdown passes against 55 interceptions. He completed 67.9% of his passes.

Since Matt Ryan left the Falcons following the 2021 season, the team has been dragged down by bad quarterback play. Collectively, Marcus Mariota, Desmond Ridder, Taylor Heinicke, and Logan Woodside combined to go 583-of-943 (61.8%) for 6,702 yards with a 34/26 TD/INT ratio.

Cousins threw 33 TD passes in 2021 alone and had 18 over just eight games this past season before suffering the torn Achilles. He’s thrown 26 interceptions over the last three seasons combined.

Suffice it to say that this is a huge upgrade for the Falcons and the first of the major QB dominoes to fall this offseason.
