Bengals vs. Giants Analysis

The Bengals were up double digits against the Ravens last week, but they weren’t able to hang on. Lamar Jackson tortured their defense with his ability to extend plays with his legs, and he ultimately won Baltimore the game in overtime — but not without a missed kick from Evan McPherson that would have won it for Cincinnati first. The Bengals are now entering Week 6 in a must-win situation. This was a team that was thinking Super Bowl before the year. At 1-4, Cincinnati needs to start thinking about simply finishing the regular season with a winning record.

On paper, the Bengals should feel really good about getting back in the win column against the Giants. This New York team had a win total of 6.5 before the season, and nobody would have expected the Giants to be such short underdogs against the Bengals heading into Week 6. However, New York has been a lot better than expected to start the year, and Cincinnati has been a lot worse. So, this game isn’t as straightforward as anybody might think. That’s why the line has come down from Bengals -5.5 to Bengals -3.5, with sharps seemingly rolling with the home team. And if I had to take one of the sides, I’d grab the Giants with the points.

While Cincinnati is third in the league in EPA per play (0.159) this season, New York is 15th in the NFL in EPA per play allowed (-0.007). That Giants have been above average on the defensive side of the ball, and they’ll also get a small bump from playing at home. Meanwhile, Cincinnati has been one of the worst defenses in the entire league. And the Bengals are especially terrible when it comes to their rushing defense. That should give the Giants some hope that they can get the ground game going, especially with Devin Singletary’s return looming. And Daniel Jones should be brimming with confidence after having gone on the road and lit up the Seahawks.

Realistically, Cincinnati’s defense is worse than New York’s offense, giving the Bengals the most glaring weakness on the field in this game. And that’s ultimately why I’d rather grab the points. It also doesn’t hurt that the Giants are 8-4-1 against the spread as home underdogs under Brian Daboll, and they’re also 13-3-1 ATS as underdogs of 3.5 to 9.5 points under him.

However, I should note that I prefer the Over in this game. While the number is definitely a little high for a game involving New York, the Over has hit in each of Cincinnati’s last four games. The Bengals have now scored at least 33 points in three consecutive games, and they’re definitely going to have some success against the Giants. But New York should also have no trouble putting up points on this Cincinnati defense, and that’s especially true after a 29-point performance against Seattle.

Bengals vs. Giants Player Props

Greg Joseph Over 6.5 Total Points (+100)

Joseph has had a total of 26 points for the Giants over the last two weeks, so this number feels extremely low to me. Two weeks ago, Joseph made five field goals against Dallas, and he backed that up with three field goals and two extra points against Seattle. Now, I just can’t imagine him having less than seven points against the Bengals. This is a game that I believe will be high in scoring, and I like New York to hang around. None of that happens without Joseph making some kicks. The only thing that would really scare me away here is some bad weather, but the forecast looks pretty good for this game.

Bengals vs. Giants Pick

I like the Giants and the Over in this game, but I love the Joseph prop. While this was not his gig to start the year, Joseph has been confident since missing his only field goal of the game against the Browns. The 30-year-old is 8 for 8 on field goals over the last two weeks, meaning he’s getting opportunities and taking advantage of them. In a potential shootout with Cincinnati, we should see more of that. Not only is this a lean for me, but it’s also one of my Week 6 best bets.

Pick: Joseph Over 6.5 Total Points (+100)
