Burke: Five tips for handling Super Bowl information overload

205

The Super Bowl is still four days away. We’re talking about it on every show and across most of our segments. So is every other sports media outlet in the country. Many of them are also talking about it in a betting context. It is inescapable at this time of the year and information overload can be a real thing.

Here are a few things that have helped me, with my betting and with my sanity, in the lead-up to the Super Bowl:

1. Keep an open mind – You think you’ve heard it all because of the amount of Super Bowl coverage, but I promise you that you haven’t. There will always be some new and interesting perspectives that could lead you to a wager or two that makes a lot of sense. It may be an angle that you never thought about and could end up being one of your best bets of the game.

2. Mind your bankroll – Whether you’ve had a good NFL season or not, this is still one game. It is the biggest single game of the year, but it is still one game. Stay within the parameters of what feels comfortable for you. If you find yourself reloading accounts left and right to keep betting props, you may want to take a step back. We’ve still got daily NBA, NHL and college basketball, plus conference tournaments and March Madness are right around the corner. This is stressful enough. Don't make it worse by betting above your means.

3. Find a distraction – The lines for the prop bets may move around. The side and total should start showing signs of life today or tomorrow. Challenge your brain by looking at something outside the Super Bowl. Whether that means handicapping hoops or getting away altogether to read a book or watch a movie. If you’re like me, you close your eyes at night and see odds screens, sportsbook pages and game highlights. Find a healthy balance with the Super Bowl.

4. Get feedback – The VSiN Help Desk is a phenomenal resource for asking questions. The betting community, either among friends or out there on social media, can be a good sounding board. It will encourage some sort of social interaction that gets your head out of the prop catalog and gets the creative juices flowing. It can reinvigorate your desire to research and study the game.

5. Make Super Bowl plans – At the end of a long two-week period of studying and researching, let it all hang out when the game starts. Go to a party. (Go to Vegas!). Plan one. Buy some Super Bowl squares or raffle tickets. Be responsible, of course. Designate a driver. Collect keys. Whatever you need to do to keep yourself and others safe, but once you’ve done all your work and you’ve locked in your bets, enjoy the game for what it is. We’ve only had 56 of these. Many of us have only had 30 or 40 in our lifetimes. It is a huge event and one to be enjoyed in the moment. Relax. Let loose. Banter with the boys, gab with the girls or do both. Have something to look forward to when all the hard work is finished.

Don’t worry. The game will actually be here before we know it.
