Falcons vs. Eagles Analysis

There was all sorts of excitement about the Falcons offense heading into this season, as the team added Kirk Cousins on a four-year, $180 million deal in the offseason. With weapons like Drake London, Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson already in the fold, many viewed Atlanta as a team that was a quarterback away from contention. However, Cousins did tear his Achilles with the Minnesota Vikings last season, and he didn’t play a single snap in preseason. So, the 36-year-old hasn’t had any time to really get comfortable with his new team, and it’s not even clear how healthy he is right now. In fact, in a Week 1 loss to Pittsburgh, Cousins was an absolute statue in the pocket. It looks like his movement is still compromised, which is preventing the Falcons from going to play action. That’s rough for this offense, as Cousins is an elite play action quarterback. Atlanta also didn’t stretch the field vertically with Cousins in Week 1.

With Cousins not yet looking like himself, it’s hard not to lean towards Philadelphia when it comes to the spread. The Eagles defense didn’t look great against the Packers in Brazil, but this Falcons offense isn’t quite as explosive — at least with Cousins the way he is. Look for Vic Fangio to send pressure against Cousins as often as possible, as he’ll want to put that footwork to the test. Philadelphia also happens to have corners that can hold their own, so the Eagles can afford to be a little aggressive in getting after Cousins here. Philadelphia will, however, need to be prepared to slow down the Atlanta running game. The Eagles won’t want to let Robinson get hot, as that would open up a lot for the Falcons.

The Eagles passing game also looked pretty difficult to stop in Week 1. Jalen Hurts did throw two interceptions in the game, and turnovers were a problem for him last year. However, the Eagles were fourth in the NFL in Dropback EPA per play in Week 1, and they should be able to find some success against this Falcons defense. One of new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s big changes was moving DeVonta Smith to the slot, and that looked like a great decision after he brought in seven catches for 84 yards in Week 1. With A.J. Brown out in this game, we should see a lot of Smith. This could also be a big game for tight end Dallas Goedert.

Philadelphia is also 18-3 straight-up and 13-6-2 against the spread as a home favorite under Nick Sirianni. The team is also 9-4 SU and 9-3-1 ATS off a win by six or fewer points under Sirianni.

Falcons vs. Eagles Player Props

Ray-Ray McCloud III Over 2.5 Receptions (-120)

We highlighted McCloud in our post-camp betting guide update, as reports suggested he’d play a big role out of the slot. Well, McCloud had four catches for 52 yards in a Week 1 loss to the Steelers, and his seven targets were a team high. There’s no guarantee the game script will be remotely similar here, and one would think that Atlanta will look to get London more involved. But I’d be surprised if we don’t see at least three catches from McCloud. Cousins didn’t look comfortable in his first start for the Falcons, and there was a clear emphasis on getting the ball out quickly. That plays into McCloud’s hands, as he’s somebody that can create separation early.

Falcons vs. Eagles Pick

This is going to be one of the rare occasions in which my player prop will be my favorite play in a primetime game. I generally try to stick to sides and totals, but this is an odd game. Philadelphia is coming off the trip to Brazil, and you never quite know how that travel will impact a team. However, the Eagles also had a little more time to prepare for this game, and Cousins’ health is a legitimate question mark. That said, I’m just firing up McCloud to hit the three-reception mark.

Pick: McCloud Over 2.5 Receptions (-120)
