Giants vs. Steelers Analysis
The Giants got absolutely stomped in their last game, as they lost 28-3 as 3-point home underdogs against the Eagles. New York started the season as a competitive bad team, but now it’s looking like this is just a bad team. The main reason for that is the loss of left tackle Andrew Thomas. Before a Lisfranc injury ended his season, the 25-year-old was doing a great job of anchoring New York’s offensive line. This is now a team that is mediocre on defense and miserable on offense. This season, New York is 21st in the NFL in EPA per play allowed (0.016) and 26th in EPA per play (-0.098). Both of those are troublesome, but the offense is concerning in this specific matchup.
I don’t think Daniel Jones is nearly as bad as the public perceives him to be, but he’s still a below-average quarterback. This season, PFF has him 24th in the league with his 65.8 grade, and nflelo has him 35th in Value vs. Average Starter. The latter means several backups have been better than him. When you combine that with the fact that he no longer has reliable blindside protection, Jones could be in for a long day against the Steelers. Pittsburgh has the best pass rusher in the league, T.J. Watt, to send after Jones all night, and the team also has a reliable secondary. The Steelers are also third in the league in Rush EPA per play allowed (-0.238) this season, so it’s not like the Giants will have an easy time getting the ground game going.
Pittsburgh should also be able to score some points against New York. The Giants have had some great games defensively, and they are much better on this side of the ball. But New York’s secondary isn’t very good, so Russell Wilson should be able to make some throws here. Last week, Wilson threw for 264 yards with two touchdowns and no picks against a good Jets defense. Wilson definitely wasn’t perfect, but he was giving his guys chances and wasn’t taking any negative plays. He also had a nice connection with wide receiver George Pickens, and I expect the two of them to continue building moving forward.
I’d just be stunned if the Steelers don’t end up winning this game, but it’s not an easy game to call when it comes to the side and total. It’s hard to lay 6 or more points with a team that lacks an explosive passing game, and it’s also hard to go Under on a total this low. So, if you’re betting this one, you might want to look to get creative. I have an idea below.
Giants vs. Steelers Player Props
George Pickens Over 4.5 Receptions (-114)
In Wilson’s first game as Pittsburgh’s starter, Pickens was targeted nine times and caught five passes for 111 yards and a touchdown. That was against a Jets defense that boasts a strong secondary. That said, I’d be pretty surprised if we don’t see another good performance out of Pickens, who has had at least five catches in four of the seven games the Steelers have played this year. Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is only going to open things up in the passing game moving forward. So, this reception total seems very low for a talented wideout.
Giants vs. Steelers Pick
The Pickens reception prop is really the only thing I’m interested in here. However, I also think that the Steelers team total Over is worth a look at 20.5. I think Pittsburgh will have a decent amount of offensive success here, and I also expect New York to set the Steelers up with good field position a couple of times.
Lean: Pickens Over 4.5 Receptions (-114)
