Patriots vs. Seahawks Analysis
In last year’s Super Bowl, the Seahawks cruised to a 29-13 victory in Levi’s Stadium. In that game, Drake Maye, who was a second-year phenom, struggled quite a bit. After a regular season in which Maye performed at an MVP level, he wasn’t nearly as effective in the postseason. That all ended with a Super Bowl performance in which Maye threw two interceptions, lost a fumble, and finished with a Pro Football Focus grade of 29.9. Heading into this massive Week 1 showdown, it’s clear Maye will need to be a lot better. Well, given the offseason New England had, we have some reasons to believe he will be.
The Patriots, who didn’t have enough weapons at wide receiver last year, went out and added A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs after the season. Brown has had at least 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in each of the last four seasons, and he’s easily one of the best receiver in football. He’s also a big physical presence, he loves playing for Mike Vrabel, and he grew up a Patriots fan. He should turn in a fantastic season. Meanwhile, Doubs doesn’t have the same eye-popping numbers as Brown, but many believe he’ll thrive in a new situation. On top of all of that, the New England offensive line should be much better. Left tackle Will Campbell is healthy after having limped through the end of last season, and the team added a stud interior lineman in guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. That said, keeping Maye upright — and throwing from a clean pocket — should be much easier than it was in last year’s playoffs.
Another thing that points to the Patriots having a better shot of scoring points here: Nick Emmanwori, the Seahawks’ jack of all trades in the back of the defense, is likely to miss this game.
On the other side of the ball, New England no longer has to deal with Kenneth Walker III, who had 161 total yards in the Super Bowl. Of course, Seattle does have some talent in the backfield, with Jadarian Price looking the part of a future star. But will the rookie be ready to shine in his first meaningful game? It’s hard to feel good about that, and it will be interesting to see if the young running back has fixed his fumbling issues. The Patriots also added defensive end Dre’Mont Jones, who had seven total sacks between the Titans and Ravens last year, meaning they could have an easier time putting pressure on Sam Darnold.
Outside of Vrabel’s off-field stuff, the Patriots just seemed to have a much better offseason than the Seahawks, and it’s hard not to value that when looking at this season opener. New England will also be out for revenge.
Considering all of the above, it’s hard not to take the points with the road team. I also love that our Circa betting splits page suggests New England is the sharper side. This opened at Patriots +5.5 on May 15, but it’s down to +3.5 despite the majority of the tickets being on the Seahawks. Some of that probably has to do with the Brown trade, but it’s still a line that looks to be frozen.
I’ll also note that the Patriots are 4-0 both straight-up and against the spread as road underdogs under Vrabel. Meanwhile, the Seahawks are just 8-10-1 ATS in home games under Mike Macdonald.
Patriots vs. Seahawks Player Props
Drake Maye Over 226.5 Passing Yards (-117)
I’m playing Maye to go Over 226.5 passing yards in this game. Last year, the MVP runner-up averaged 248.7 yards per game across 21 games. Also, while he did struggle in the Super Bowl, he did throw for 295 yards against this defense. With TreVeyon Henderson banged up, along with the arrivals of Brown and Doubs, I just see this being another game in which Maye will be asked to use his arm a lot.
Patriots vs. Seahawks Pick
I know the general consensus surrounding New England is that the team is due for some regression this year, as the schedule is much tougher than it was a season ago. However, I strongly believe the Patriots improved their roster significantly, and I’m not sure the Seahawks depth chart looks any better than it did a year ago. So, I’ll take the points in what should be a competitive game, and I’ll also sprinkle the moneyline at +165.
Bet: Patriots +3.5 (-110 – 1.5 units) & Patriots ML (+165 – 0.5 units) & Maye Over 226.5 Passing Yards (-117)
