Spain and Belgium meet in the quarterfinals of the World Cup for their first competitive meeting in almost 17 years, with a place in the semi-final against either France or Morocco awaiting the winner.
Spain may have started the tournament a little slower than expected, but they have grown into one of the most complete teams in the competition. Through five matches, they are yet to concede a goal, and their defensive structure has been nothing short of breathtaking. Belgium impressed me in their win over the United States, but this is a huge step up in quality, and Spain’s defensive record immediately stands out as the strongest betting angle.
One thing I have consistently said before and throughout this tournament is that the World Cup will be won in midfield, and I think that is where Spain have a huge advantage. Rodri has been the best midfielder at the tournament so far, while Pedri has been great alongside him. Together, they have controlled the tempo in almost every match, allowing Spain to dominate possession and limit the number of chances their opponents have had.
Belgium have also faced some big selection decisions. Kevin De Bruyne and Jérémy Doku were both left out of the starting XI against the USA, although there are rumors they could return here. Even if they do, I still don’t think Belgium can match Spain across the middle of the pitch, and if Portugal struggled to cope with Spain’s quality, I expect Belgium to find it even more difficult.
The numbers also support Spain defensively. Both Teams Not to Score has landed in 12 of Spain’s last 15 matches, while 10 of their last 11 victories have come to nil. Everything points towards another controlled Spanish performance, and at +180, Spain to Win to Nil is my favorite bet of the day.
