US Open betting odds and players to watch
Carlos Alcaraz just won the Wimbledon title for the second year in a row. The Spaniard has now won four Grand Slam titles, putting him on an incredible pace to challenge the all-time greats. Alcaraz will now head to the 2024 US Open looking to win his third major in a row, as he was also victorious at the French Open. However, this is an event in which Alcaraz’s peers become a little more dangerous. So, if Alcaraz is going to win another, he’ll really have to earn it. Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1, will definitely be eager to get back on hard courts. And Novak Djokovic, who won this event in 2023, will be further removed from the meniscus surgery that nearly cost him an appearance at Wimbledon. All in all, this is an event that should be extremely fun to watch. Keep reading for an early look at the betting odds, favorites and players to watch.

US Open Favorites – Men
Carlos Alcaraz (+125)
Novak Djokovic (+220)
Jannik Sinner (+240)
Alcaraz rightfully enters this tournament as the betting favorite. The Spaniard really didn’t play his best tennis at the French Open or Wimbledon, but he was still able to add two more majors to his impressive resume. Alcaraz should be more dangerous in Flushing Meadows than he was at either of the previous events. He has been tinkering with his serve and it was a full-on weapon against Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. As that continues to get better, Alcaraz will become harder and harder to beat. He’s already the best player in the world from the baseline, despite having questionable shot selection.
Djokovic struggled against Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, but making it to that point was an accomplishment. Djokovic had surgery in early June and was no lock to even play at the All England Club. Well, the 24-time Grand Slam champion got himself on the court and gave himself a chance. And overall, he played better tennis than he had at any point in the 2024 season. He’s trending in a positive direction and should be a contender in New York.
Sinner won the 2024 Australian Open. That’s the only other hard-court major of the season. So, the Italian will head to New York with supreme confidence. His ability to bomb serves, bash the ball from the baseline and also defend the court at a high level should make him a champion in Arthur Ashe Stadium one day. The only issue with Sinner is that he has been struggling to keep himself healthy lately. His conditioning failed him in back-to-back majors. Will that happen again at the US Open? It does get humid at this tournament.
US Open Players To Watch – Men
Casper Ruud (40-1)
Ruud is undoubtedly at his best on clay, but these odds seem extremely long for the 2022 US Open runner-up. Sure, the guys in the top tier are all stellar, but Ruud is the most consistent performer in the second tier. You just can’t rule out the possibility of him making another deep run. I’ll be keeping a close eye on his odds to win his quarter. If these odds are any indication, you might be able to get a good price there. And Ruud is always a threat to make the semifinals of a major.
Ben Shelton (50-1)
Shelton probably doesn’t have what it takes to win a major right now. He still has a lot of work to do when it comes to match psychology and point construction. However, Shelton seems to always up his game at majors. And he’s the type of player that can feed off the New York crowd and make a run. So, don’t rule out the young American when looking at quarter bets. His massive serve will make him a tough out against any opponent.

US Open Favorites – Women
Aryna Sabalenka (+300)
Iga Swiatek (+300)
Elena Rybakina (+550)
Coco Gauff (+550)
Sabalenka was unable to play at Wimbledon, as she had a shoulder injury that was too tough to play through. It was a shame considering the Belarusian was the betting favorite and had a dream draw. But Sabalenka now heads back to New York, where she lost in the final in 2023. Sabalenka’s power makes her a real force on these courts. She’ll feel good about her chances against anybody outside of Gauff, whose massive home-court advantage caused Sabalenka to unravel in last year’s final.
Swiatek is coming off another disappointing Wimbledon run, but she has never been a good grass-court performer. The Pole has a much better shot at winning the US Open, which she actually won in 2022. Swiatek is definitely at her very best at clay, but the courts in New York are slow enough for her to still play her brand of world-class defense, and her big topspin forehand is still a weapon in these conditions. If she continues to make strides with her serve, she’ll have a great shot at winning this. She’s having a career year as a server and it seems like things are only getting better there.
Rybakina suffered a very disappointing loss to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova in the Wimbledon semifinals. Krejcikova is a great all-court performer, but Rybakina had her chances there. And overall, she’s viewed as the top grass-court player in the women’s game. The good news is that Rybakina’s ability to serve makes her a threat on all surfaces, so she should be a contender at the US Open. She has never been beyond the third round here, but that is bound to change soon. There’s no reason she can’t one day win this event.
I’m not usually high on Gauff’s game, as I think her forehand is a mess and her serve comes and goes. However, Gauff is arguably the player to beat in New York. The fans gravitate towards her in a special way, creating one of the most unique environments in tennis. The crowd visibly gets to Gauff’s opponents, causing them to miss shots they normally make. The American is then able to outlast them with her all-world defense. If Gauff can just focus on playing with a little more shape from the forehand side, she should make another deep run here. The defending champion just needs to avoid dumping forehands into the net.
US Open Players To Watch – Women
Danielle Collins (25-1)
Collins is playing in her final season on the WTA Tour, but she’s playing the best tennis of her life. She won the biggest title of her career at the Miami Open in March, and I don’t see any reason she can’t turn things back on as we head back to hard courts. She just has so much power from the baseline that she can really make things difficult on opponents. Collins will also have the crowd firmly in her corner, as the fans in New York will definitely want to see her go out with her first Grand Slam title.
