Mutua Madrid Open Predictions for Wednesday, April 23rd

The top players in the world are in Madrid for a pair of 1000-level events this week, as it’s time for the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open. I’ll be posting daily articles with my best bets for the action at the Caja Magica, so come back to VSiN if you’re looking to bet on some tennis. Also, make sure you’re checking out the picks page for all of my action for smaller tournaments and Challengers.

We’re entering the most exciting portion of the tennis calendar, as there are several 1000-level events in the coming weeks. Those then flow into the majors, so everything heats up pretty quickly. We’ll be covering all of them, whether that’s with my columns or Gill Alexander’s excellent work on A Numbers Game. That said, if you like tennis, now is the time to consider a VSiN Pro subscription! It’s only $59 to get access to everything until August 1st!

Fabian Marozsan vs. Flavio Cobolli

This is going to be a fun match to watch, as both of these guys have the ability to win on clay. However, Cobolli is a player that badly needs to improve his serve, and that should put him at a disadvantage here. In Madrid, a good serve is something that can really help you win matches, as the altitude makes it one of the most server-friendly clay-court events on the calendar. Well, Marozsan has a big serve and some impressive power from the back of the court. He also has an elite ability to hit drop shots, so if Cobolli is ever too far back in the court then he’ll be in trouble.

Marozsan is also playing very well coming into this one, as he just made a run to the semifinals in Munich. That was another clay-court event played at altitude, so we know the conditions suit him well. He shouldn’t have to adjust much in Madrid.

Pick: Marozsan ML (-133 – 1.5 units)

Xinyu Wang vs. Maria Sakkari

It’s hard to be too impressed with what we have seen from Sakkari lately. She’s just not consistently winning matches. However, there have been some moments, and it seems she’s starting to get healthy. The confidence should follow. But even a Sakkari that is well below her top level should be able to beat Wang on clay. Wang is just 5-8 since the start of the 2025 season, and this will be her first WTA-level clay-court match of the year. So, she’s going to be adjusting to a new surface, while Sakkari has already played three matches on the dirt. Sakkari also happens to be 63-46 on clay in her career. And while she has struggled over the last few years, she’s still 7-6 on the dirt over the last 52 weeks. I trust her to figure this out. She’s the better athlete, the better ball striker and the better overall competitor.

Pick: Sakkari ML (-159 – 1.5 units)

Bianca Andreescu vs. McCartney Kessler

Andreescu is back in action after five full months off. Last week, she lost 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (2) in a tight three-set match against Suzan Lamens in Rouen. That was definitely a match she could have won, and you always want to see talented players find ways to overcome adversity and win close matches. But Andreescu’s level in the final two sets was pretty high, and she’s going to be a very tough matchup for Kessler.

Kessler is a competitive player that plays an aggressive brand of tennis, but she’s just 0-2 on clay at the WTA level. And most of her success at the lower levels of tennis has come on hard courts. So, with Andreescu being 17-13 on clay in her career, she should be able to make Kessler uncomfortable. She’s the more powerful player. She also has more variety. She just needs to find a way to get through this match healthy.

Pick: Andreescu ML (-110 – 1.5 units)
