MLB Player Props for Tuesday, May 7

The 2024 MLB season is finally here. After another wild offseason and an exciting couple of weeks of Spring Training, we’re ready for some games that matter. This season, VSiN Managing Editor Adam Burke will have you covered when it comes to MLB sides and totals in his daily best bets column. You’ll also get some First Five Inning analysis from Jonathan Von Tobel. On top of that, our analytics guru Steve Makinen will feed you some interesting trends and systems on a daily basis. But I’ll be focusing specifically on MLB player props this season, dishing out at least three per day every Monday to Friday. With that in mind, let’s get into the plays for Tuesday, May 7th.

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Guardians – 6:10 pm ET

Kenta Maeda has had two starts this season in which he gave up five or more earned runs, and those have really skewed his numbers. But Maeda has allowed one or fewer earned runs in back-to-back outings and three of his last four starts. Now, Maeda is going up against a Guardians team that just lost Steven Kwan, who is batting .353 with three homers and 11 RBIs. And Cleveland was already just 15th in MLB in wRC+ against right-handed pitching. Considering Kwan is batting .333 with two triples, two homers, five doubles and seven RBIs against righties, it’s now hard to picture where the production will come from in matchups like these. That said, I’m fading the Guardians in this spot and banking on Maeda to avoid any serious trouble.

Pick: Maeda Under 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed (-110)

Los Angeles Angels at Pittsburgh Pirates – 6:40 pm ET

Quinn Priester is a pitcher that I’m interested in targeting for a little. It didn’t go well the last time I went to a batter prop against him, but Priester isn’t very good against lefties. That said, I’m taking a shot on Nolan Schanuel to have at least two total hits, runs and RBIs this evening. Schanuel is starting to heat up after a really slow start to the year. He was batting just .093 back on April 16th, but he’s now up to .233 with three homers and 11 RBIs. Schanuel also feels a little due for a big performance at the plate, as he is just 1 for 11 over the last three games. That said, I’m rolling with Schnauel to make something happen in a matchup he should enjoy quite a bit. Schanuel has a world of talent and could be a household name by the end of the season.

Pick: Schanuel Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs (-140)

Arizona Diamondbacks at Cincinnati Reds – 6:40 pm ET

Zac Gallen is 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA to start the 2024 season. The righty hasn’t looked quite as sharp as he did in 2023, with his velocity being down on both his four-seam fastball and knuckle curve. Perhaps that has something to do with the Diamondbacks making the World Series. But even with some diminished stuff, I like Gallen to have at least seven strikeouts tonight. The righty has reached that mark in two of his five starts this season, but he has failed to do so in his last two games. But the Reds have the second-highest strikeout rate in the league against right-handed pitching this year. So, this is a great opportunity for Gallen to get himself going with his swing-and-miss stuff. And this really reminds me of yesterday’s play with Simeon Woods Richardson going against the Seattle Mariners. There are a bunch of players in the Reds lineup with strikeout rates of 25.0% or higher, and a lot of these guys chase pitches.

Pick: Gallen 7+ Strikeouts (+140)
