Back in the “old days’ when I used to commandeer the ship known as the VSiN Point Spread Weekly, we used to publish an MLB Team Report weekly for subscribers. On it, we would give weekly updates for every team on their performance levels in a variety of situations. As an editor and as a baseball bettor, I feel like it helped me keep on top of the important team tendencies that any handicapper should be well aware of. While we do cover a whole lot more on a daily basis in our Analytics Reports, I still feel like I miss some of the more obvious team tendencies when taking a deeper look at each game. With that in mind, as we steam towards August with another huge slate of games on tap for this week, I figured it would be a great time to peruse the old VSiN MLB Team Report and share some of the most interesting findings, specifically where it might pertain to this weekend’s matchups. You’ll see I’ve noted something I feel is important right now for every one of the league’s 30 teams, and I’ve included my thoughts on it.

By the way, if you were expecting an MLB Bullpen Systems Update from me this week, I’ve decided to push that till next week as we only had three days’ worth of games since the All-Star break. That said, we are continuously updating the system records on our MLB Analytics Reports each day.

For your benefit, and to reintroduce you to the report if you’ve never seen it, I’ve included a link to the latest report HERE, a snapshot from Monday morning, July 20th.

Here are some of the top trends and various performance angles that stood out to me as I analyzed the report and each team’s recent game action. They are sorted by team:

ARIZONA
Key Angle(s): ARIZONA has raked on left-handed starting pitchers this season, going 15-7 for +8.89 units
Steve’s thoughts: Arizona used the All-Star break quite effectively, getting hot right before it by winning their final four games into it, and then staying hot afterward by taking two of three from St Louis over the weekend. In Sunday’s contest, the DBacks posted a huge come-from-behind 8-7 win. They have a great chance to stay hot, as according to the pitching probables, their opponent for the early part of the week, the Athletics, are slated to go with left-handed starters on both Monday and Wednesday.

ATHLETICS
Key Angle(s): ATHLETICS are 2-15 in their last 17 games for -13.78 units
Steve’s thoughts: The wheels have fallen off for the Athletics after contending near the top of the AL West Division for most of the first half of the season. Recently, injuries have been a big contributor, as the lineup has lost DH Brent Rooker, 1B Nick Kurtz, and 3B Zack Gelof for extended periods. It has had a huge impact on their ability to score runs, as this team has scored just 37 runs in those 15 losses. With trips to Arizona and Minnesota this week, those teams have to be looking for series wins at the least.

ATLANTA
Key Angle(s): ATLANTA is 19-13 for +0.74 units in interleague play
Steve’s thoughts: The Braves are anxiously awaiting the return of OF Ronald Acuna Jr. from the DL sometime this week, as the offense has struggled without him and they have been essentially going through the motions since their red-hot start. In fact, since topping out at 24-games over .500 (45-21), Atlanta is just 12-20 in its last 32 games. However, they have been good in almost every situational spot this season, as evidenced by the report. In interleague games, they’ve won 59.4% of their games while scoring 5.1 RPG, both measures slightly better than their overall figures.

BALTIMORE
Key Angle(s): BALTIMORE is 11-15 for -4.17 units in divisional games this season
Steve’s thoughts: The Orioles are the second hottest team in baseball right now, having won seven straight games. Unfortunately, to start the week, they meet up with the hottest team, Boston, who has won 13 straight contests. Adding to the challenge is the fact that Baltimore has struggled in divisional play this season and on the road, as they are five games under .500 in that spot. Simply getting one of three against the BoSox might be a plus here. The Braves then come calling this weekend, and they are expected to be full strength finally for that series. Could be a tough week for the O’s to keep this hot stretch going.

BOSTON
Key Angle(s): BOSTON has won 13 straight games overall and 18 out of 20
Steve’s thoughts: There is simply no team hotter right now than the Boston Red Sox. The Orioles and Blue Jays, this week’s opponents, should beware. The Red Sox bullpen has ascended to the top of my ratings this week, and finally the offense has joined the party after a seemingly 78-game slumber to start the season. At that point, Boston was 32-46. Since then, they have scored 5.3 RPG in getting to 50-48 and back in Wild Card position. However, it has been the bullpen that remains this team’s best unit. Over the last 20 games, the stats for that group are bewildering: 2.45 ERA, 1.03 WHIP.

CHICAGO CUBS
Key Angle(s): CHICAGO CUBS are 13-16 for -7.75 units in interleague games in 2026
Steve’s thoughts: Even after winning two of three games over the weekend versus the Twins, the Cubs are still three games under .500 versus American League opponents this season. Keep in mind that they are 13 games over .500 overall, so this has clearly been a weak spot. For the record, they are also 13-13 in divisional games for -2.72 units as well, and they have a series at Pittsburgh on deck. They’ll have to overcome these tendencies this week to stay with Milwaukee in the NL Central race.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX
Key Angle(s): CHICAGO WHITE SOX are 31-17 for -+15.81 units at home this season but just 21-29 for -3.07 units on the road
Steve’s thoughts: For as much as the White Sox head into this week’s action atop the AL Central standings by a game, the home/road dichotomy this season so far has been eye-opening. At home, the White Sox are tough to beat, and they are anxious to get back to the Windy City this weekend to host Houston. However, they face three tough games at Texas before that happens.

CINCINNATI
Key Angle(s): CINCINNATI is 6-22 for -15.16 units in divisional games in 2026
Steve’s thoughts: The Reds were once atop the AL Central standings in the first half of the season. Then divisional play hit, and they dropped like a rock to where they now sit 16.5 games back of the Brewers for the division lead. With a 6-22 record against divisional rivals, it’s not hard to figure where the current deficit came from. After a West Coast series at Seattle continues a lengthy road trip, a weekend series at St Louis awaits.

CLEVELAND
Key Angle(s): CLEVELAND is 31-35 for -5.06 units this season versus right-handed starting pitchers
Steve’s thoughts: Cleveland is only a game back of the White Sox as we enter play this last full week of July. However, for any team looking to contend in a playoff race, it isn’t a good tendency to struggle against right-handed pitching. At this point, the Guardians are scoring just 3.5 RPG in that spot while putting up 4.8 RPG versus southpaws. That is quite a differential and a massive weak spot for this team. It seems as if they will only be facing one left-hander this week in seven games with the Twins and Rays.

COLORADO
Key Angle(s): COLORADO is 27-50 for -9.61 units versus fellow National League foes in 2026
Steve’s thoughts: Yes, the Rockies are actually over .500 versus American League teams this season! Unfortunately, those games represent such a small part of each team’s schedule that failing in the opposite can’t be overcome. This week’s schedule for Colorado brings a home series versus Washington and a trip to Milwaukee. Both teams are right in the thick of the playoff picture too. Keep any optimism in check.

DETROIT
Key Angle(s): DETROIT is 9-16 for -11 units in divisional games this season
Steve’s thoughts: The Tigers have crept back up a bit in the AL Central standings with a recent hot stretch, having gone 11-4 in their last 15 games. Management has to be confused now as to whether to sell or buy at the trade deadline. Of course, had the Tigers been 16-9 in divisional games thus far rather than the opposite, there would be no confusion at all. The next divisional series comes this weekend as they host Kansas City.

HOUSTON
Key Angle(s): HOUSTON is 10-17 for -8.97 units in interleague games in 2026
Steve’s thoughts: Houston is seven games under .500 overall and yet still sits just four games back of Texas for the AL West lead. On top of that, the Astros are just 5-10 in their last 15 games, and it hasn’t affected them all that badly in the standings. While it doesn’t seem like anything is ever going to really click for the 2026 version of this team, improving their interleague record would be a good kickstart. They open this week with three games against the Marlins at home. Considering they are 10-17 in interleague play, outscored by a 4.4-5.5 margin on average in those games, and aren’t playing well currently, is taking two of three even realistic?

KANSAS CITY
Key Angle(s): KANSAS CITY is 8-21 for -13.76 units versus left-handed starters this season
Steve’s thoughts: Looking at the week ahead for the Royals, who’ve essentially floundered all season long to a 40-60 won-lost mark, fortunately, only one of the six games against the Giants and Tigers comes against a left-handed starting pitcher. That game is on Friday night against arguably the league’s best lefty, Tarik Skubal. The rest of the week shouldn’t be nearly as bad!

LOS ANGELES ANGELS
Key Angle(s): LA ANGELS are 24-45 for -20.53 units in night games this season
Steve’s thoughts: Simply put, if you can’t win baseball games at night in MLB, you can’t contend. I don’t know if it is an issue of star gazing or being up past their bedtime, but the Angels have been atrocious playing at night this season. In fact, their offense is scoring just 4.1 RPG at night vs. 4.9 in the day. The good news…this week brings a 3/3 split – Monday, Tuesday, Friday night games, Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday afternoon tilts.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS
Key Angle(s): LA DODGERS are 32-18 for +0.43 units this season on the road
Steve’s thoughts: When you are 26 games over .500 overall and still producing -13.29 units of loss for bettors, you know you are a severely overpriced team. That is what afflicts the Dodgers almost every season in this era. However, for 2026, heading into a week where they continue a east coast road swing with stops at Philadelphia and the Mets, LA will look to build on profits for their backers. If you look at the report below, you’ll see road games are the only spot in which bettors backing the defending champs are making money, as the lineup is putting up 5.9 RPG.

MIAMI
Key Angle(s): MIAMI is 31-20 for +6.85 units at home but 21-28 for -2.72 units on the road
Steve’s thoughts: Miami has lost a season-high six straight games and is obviously anxious to make it back home this weekend for a three-game set with the Padres without losing too much more ground. However, the Marlins still have a stop at Houston to deal with, starting Monday. The Astros are also in the throes of a losing skid, however, so something has to give. With Miami boasting a 42-31 record (+12.06) units versus right-handed starters, and Houston slated with righties in each of the next three days, I know where my money would be.

MILWAUKEE
Key Angle(s): MILWAUKEE is producing profits in every measurable category
Steve’s thoughts: it’s almost impossible at this point to locate a situational spot in which the Brewers don’t fare well for bettors. Even after losing three straight games at Pittsburgh heading into the All-Star break, the Brewers rebounded immediately with a weekend sweep of the Marlins. In all three games, the Brewers came from behind. They did that without their best pitchers going too. Now this week brings the two teams with the worst records in the National League and stud Jacob Misiorowski is expected to go Monday and Sunday. Things are bright in Milwaukee right now.

MINNESOTA
Key Angle(s): MINNESOTA is 37-30 for +9.64 units versus AL teams in 2026
Steve’s thoughts: Fortunately for the Twins, teams play only 46 interleague games this season. They have 33 of those in the books already but are just 12-21. That means that 49 of their final 62 games will be against league foes, which could have them back near the top of the AL Central Division if they can continue to perform in that spot as they have so far. This week’s schedule brings four games at Cleveland, then three at home versus the Athletics. Perhaps the start of something big?

NEW YORK METS
Key Angle(s): NY METS are 23-40 versus plus-.500 teams this season
Steve’s thoughts: On a percentage basis, only two MLB teams are worse this season when playing against good teams, the Royals and Rockies. Will this trend matter this week for the Mets, who currently sit 16-games back in the NL East standings? Well, considering the opponents are the Brewers and Dodgers, the two teams with the best records in baseball currently, I would say yes…the trend matters.

NEW YORK YANKEES
Key Angle(s): NY YANKEES are 24-22 for -12.71 units at home but 31-22 for +3.77 units on the road
Steve’s thoughts: Like the Dodgers, the Yankees are another team that simply gets overpriced on a daily basis. Even though they are over .500 at home, they are still producing big losses for bettors (-27.6% ROI). They are a clear better wagering option when playing on the road this season. Consider these trends as you handicap their early week series at home versus Pittsburgh and then their weekend trip to Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA
Key Angle(s): PHILADELPHIA is just 19-19 for -5.99 units versus left-handed starters
Steve’s thoughts: As the Phillies begin a huge week of action with home series against the Dodgers and Yankees, we have to consider that the way to shut down the Phillies’ lineup is to have some reliable left-handed starting pitching. They have scored just 3.9 RPG in that spot this year against 4.6 versus right-handers. Looking at what LA and NY slot to start in the two series, it seems that we will see lefties on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday.

PITTSBURGH
Key Angle(s): PITTSBURGH is 20-9 OVER the total (+10.2 units) in divisional games this season
Steve’s thoughts: The Pirates have clearly picked the right time for their best offensive numbers this season, as they have scored 5.8 RPG when facing divisional rivals this season. In their most recent series versus NL Central rival Milwaukee before the break, Pittsburgh put up 24 runs in a three-game sweep, advancing their divisional record to 17-12. They’ll put both of these trends on the line this weekend when they host the Cubs.

SAN DIEGO
Key Angle(s): SAN DIEGO is 29-37 for -10.13 units versus NL teams in 2026
Steve’s thoughts: I swear I keep falling for the thought that this Padres team is going to wake up from its two-month slumber at some point. Perhaps this is just how good (or bad) they really are. Since topping out at 11-games over .500 at 29-18, San Diego has gone just 20-32 since. Their worst hitting and overall baseball, for that matter, has come against fellow National League teams, as they are scoring just 3.8 RPG in such contests. The bad news is this week brings two more NL foes, and on the road no less, at Atlanta, at Miami.

SAN FRANCISCO
Key Angle(s): SAN FRANCISCO is just 9-15 for -5.75 units in interleague games
Steve’s thoughts: For as much as the Giants have underperformed in almost every situational spot this season, the fact that they face Kansas City and the Angels in separate series this week made this the most appropriate trend to post. San Francisco’s run production versus AL opposition drops to 3.8 RPG vs. 4.2 in league play.

SEATTLE
Key Angle(s): SEATTLE is 17-9 for +4.45 units versus AL West rivals this year
Steve’s thoughts: Currently sitting a half game back of Texas in the AL West standings heading into the week, Seattle has been a relative disappointment so far this season. However, the Mariners do have a chance to make a move this weekend when they visit the Rangers for three games. As this trend states, they’ve been solid in divisional play, although they’ve been far better at home than on the road.

ST LOUIS
Key Angle(s): ST LOUIS is 35-24 for +14.02 units in night games this season
Steve’s thoughts: The Cardinals have done their best work at night this season, going 11-games over .500 as compared to 16-23 in afternoon tilts. This could prove to be a beneficial trend this week as they play a full slate of seven games, four at Arizona, and three hosting the Reds. Only the final games in each series in daytime affairs.

TAMPA BAY
Key Angle(s): TAMPA BAY is 35-15 for +14.07 units at home but 21-27 for -6.9 units on the road
Steve’s thoughts: Tampa Bay has been like Jekyll & Hyde when considering home & road performance this season. Dominant at home, ordinary on the road. Their current five-game swoon, of course, came on the road, and they aren’t even close to being done with the road swing, as they face four games in Toronto before finally coming home to host Cleveland. It remains to be seen whether or not they’ll still be in the division lead when they finally get back to the Trop.

TEXAS
Key Angle(s): TEXAS is 13-10 vs. left-handed starting pitching this season, scoring 4.9 RPG
Steve’s thoughts: Unfortunately, this sample size represents less than a quarter of the games the Rangers have played this season. They just don’t have a lot of lefties thrown at them. For comparison purposes, the lineup produces a full run per game less versus righties. In looking at this week’s slate, the Rangers should only expect to see two lefties, on Tuesday and Wednesday of the White Sox set. The Mariners have timed the big three-game weekend series for their three top right-handers.

TORONTO
Key Angle(s): TORONTO is 32-43 vs. right-handed starting pitching this season, scoring just 3.9 RPG
Steve’s thoughts: The defending AL Champs have looked anything but that level in 2026, and currently find themselves at the bottom of the AL East standings, 10.5 games out. One of the primary reasons is their struggles against right-handed pitching, as they are scoring sub-4 runs per game in that situation. To anyone who remembers how they raked in the playoffs last October, this is unfathomable. With seven games in seven days this week, expect the Thursday, Friday, and Sunday games to be against lefties.

WASHINGTON
Key Angle(s): WASHINGTON is 30-19 on the road this season for +21.34 units
Steve’s thoughts: At this point, if you asked Manager Blake Butera, he probably wouldn’t mind if his team played all of its games on the road. Had the Nationals even played .500 ball at home this season, they’d be at or near the top of the NL East Division. The ironic thing is this lineup still produces 5.3 RPG at home, as opposed to 5.6 RPG on the road. Well, the week finds the Nats at Colorado to start, where they should score plenty, before they come home to host Arizona.
