Pistons ML (-124) vs. 76ers

Sixers at Pistons – 7:00 pm ET

I gave this out on “Cashing Out” during my weekly Tuesday evening slot. You’ll have to pay up a bit more for it now, but that’s occasionally going to happen — and I got a bad number on the play directly below this to even it out.

The reality is that I’m extremely high on Detroit, and I remain somewhat skeptical of Philadelphia. This Pistons team is No. 1 in the NBA in points allowed per 100 possessions (103.1), and I strongly believe they have what it takes to slow down the 76ers.

After all, while Philadelphia is 7-1 on the year, the team is just 21st in the NBA in points per 100 possessions (110.3). That’s part of the reason it’s hard to fully buy into the start. Of course, the 76ers are playing very well defensively, ranking third in points allowed per 100 possessions (105.4). The issue is that Philadelphia still has some weak defenders scattered throughout the rotation, and the right teams should be able to take advantage of that. Detroit, with all of the off-ball actions it runs to free up shooters, should be one of them. The best way to make a bad defender stand out is by making them guard off the ball.

I will say that this is one of the games in which Jalen Duren could be missed. You’d like to have his size out there so there’s someone who can bang with Joel Embiid around the basket. However, Paul Reed has only added to what the Pistons have to offer defensively, as he’s a little quicker than Duren and plays with more activity. That trade-off could work out somewhat nicely against the speed the Sixers boast in their backcourt.

Detroit is also 47-22 straight up as a home favorite under JB Bickerstaff. Over the last three seasons, the Pistons are 4-1 SU and 3-2 against the spread when facing teams allowing 108.0 or fewer points per game. Detroit does well in the defense-vs.-defense showdowns.

Cavaliers +3 (-110) & Cavaliers ML (+124 – 0.5 units) vs. Thunder

Cavaliers at Thunder – 8:00 pm ET

This is another one I gave out during my spot last night, but you’re going to get a better number than I did. Still, even with some minor line movement, I like Cleveland’s chances.

The Cavaliers will be without Peyton Watson and Jaylon Tyson tonight, which probably has something to do with the odds moving. However, let’s remember that the Thunder are missing Chet Holmgren, Cason Wallace, and Jalen Williams. They could also be without Jaylin Williams, who is listed as questionable. This just isn’t the Oklahoma City team we saw win a title, as this group is missing a ton on both ends of the floor. Cleveland, a very balanced team with tons of firepower, should be able to take advantage.

Naturally, many will point out that the Thunder went into Cleveland and beat the Cavaliers on Monday, and the easy logic would be that playing at Paycom Center will only tilt the scales further in their favor. However, what I see when looking at that last game is that Oklahoma City shot 39% from three and Cleveland missed 10 free throws. I doubt we’ll see either of those things again tonight.

Spurs -11.5 (-105) vs. Mavericks

Mavericks at Spurs – 9:30 pm ET

I rarely lay double digits in the NBA, but this game feels like it could be one-sided. I know the Mavericks have been solid to start the year, but San Antonio’s metrics are just way better than Dallas’. The Spurs are currently No. 9 in the NBA in points per 100 possessions (116.4) and No. 5 in points allowed per 100 possessions (107.0). Meanwhile, the Mavericks are No. 15 in points per 100 possessions (112.9) and No. 22 in points allowed per 100 possessions (115.2).

San Antonio is just much better on both ends of the floor, plus the team has Victor Wembanyama and his otherworldly length to bother Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg at the rim. And offensively, the Spurs have a three-headed monster at guard to attack a weak Mavericks defensive backcourt.

The Mavericks are also 0-2 ATS as underdogs of 10 or more this season, which is the team’s first under Dusty May. Meanwhile, the Spurs are 12-6-1 ATS when coming off a win by at least 20 under Mitch Johnson. When they’re hot, they’re hot.
