NFL Preseason Systematic Betting Concepts
The following systems were from the article NFL Top Ten Preseason Betting Concepts to Consider for 2026 posted on Monday, August 10th, 2026
Line ranges have proven very telling
Oddsmakers have essentially led bettors to water in the preseason, although it is easy to see how these prices can seem tricky to bettors. Since 2010, favorites in the “sweet spot” range of -3.5 to -7 have been solid, going 162-144-4 ATS for 52.9%. Most games, however, tend to land in the -1 to -3 range, and those contests are where the underdogs thrive. Since 2015, underdogs in the +1 to +3 range own a highly profitable record of 205-135-1 ATS, good for 60.3%!
System Matches (PLAY ALL): FAVORITES -3.5 to -7: LAS VEGAS (-3.5 vs SF), LA CHARGERS (-3.5 vs LAR), ATLANTA (-3.5 at MIA), DENVER (-6.5 vs MIN), INDIANAPOLIS (-3.5 vs DET)
UNDERDOGS +1 to +3: PITTSBURGH (+3 at BUF), CLEVELAND (+2.5 vs NE), WASHINGTON (+2.5 at BAL), CAROLINA (+1.5 vs HOU), NY JETS (+3 vs NYG), JACKSONVILLE (+3 vs TB), KANSAS CITY (+2.5 vs SEA), NEW ORLEANS (+1.5 at DAL), CINCINNATI (+3 at PHI), GREEN BAY (+1.5 vs ARI), CHICAGO (+2.5 at TEN)
Home field advantage usually means very little in tight-lined games
In looking at the home/road results of the last 14 NFL preseasons, there’s been only four years where home teams finished with a record of better than .500 ATS. Last year was one of those, though hosts were just 25-23 ATS. In fact, since 2011, road teams own a 438-389 ATS edge, good for 53%, and essentially enough to make a profit without any other handicapping considered. However, the absolute best time to back road teams is in spots where they are underdogs of 2.5 points or less, as they have gone 92-45 ATS as such since 2015, good for 67.2%!
System Matches (PLAY ALL): WASHINGTON (+2.5 at BAL), NEW ORLEANS (+1.5 at DAL), CHICAGO (+2.5 at TEN)
Big wins have a carryover effect
NFL teams coming off preseason wins of 20+ points and favored are on a 31-10 SU and 24-14-2 ATS (63.2%) surge since 2013. Most bettors favor a yin-yang strategy in the preseason, assuming the scales balance out, but in truth, big wins have provided big momentum for the next game as well.
System Matches (PLAY ALL): BUFFALO (-3 vs PIT), ATLANTA (-3.5 at MIA), NY GIANTS (-3 at NYJ), DALLAS (-1.5 vs NO)
Big wins do not have a carryover effect if they are home underdogs
NFL teams coming off preseason wins of 11+ points and are home underdogs in the next game are on a 4-17 SU and 4-15-2 ATS (21.1%) skid since 2010.
System Matches (FADE ALL): NY JETS (+3 vs NYG), CAROLINA (+1.5 vs HOU), GREEN BAY (+1.5 vs ARI)
Teams off double-digit losses are bad bets at home, good on the road
Double-digit games are noteworthy as indicators of the potential performance of the losing team in the follow-up game. When these teams have played at home the following week, they have gone just 42-61 ATS (40.8%) since 2013. When they faced their next contest on the road, they have performed well, 65-44-1 ATS (59.6%) in that same time span. This 18%+ variance is something you are going to want to give consideration to in the final two weeks of this year’s preseason.
System Matches: ROAD (PLAY) – PITTSBURGH (+3 at BUF), NEW ORLEANS (+1.5 at DAL), ARIZONA (-1.5 at GB), MINNESOTA (+6.5 at DEN), CHICAGO (+2.5 at TEN)
HOME (FADE) – LA CHARGERS (-3.5 vs LAR), CLEVELAND (+2.5 vs NE), MIAMI (+3.5 vs ATL), JACKSONVILLE (+3 vs TB), DENVER (-6.5 vs MIN), INDIANAPOLIS (-3.5 vs DET)
Teams that scored very well last game tend to come back down to earth
Offensive outbursts one week don’t tend to carry over to the next game in the preseason, as teams that scored 34 points or more in their previous exhibition game have gone just 17-19 SU and 15-20-1 ATS (42.9%) since 2015. Only two of these 36 teams reached 30 again as well.
System Matches (FADE ALL): SAN FRANCISCO (+3.5 at LVR), LA RAMS (+3.5 at LAC), ATLANTA (-3.5 at MIA), DALLAS (-1.5 vs NO), CAROLINA (+1.5 vs HOU)
Fade home teams that had huge defensive efforts last time out
Teams playing at home after allowing 7 points or fewer in their previous preseason game are just 23-32-1 SU and 21-33-2 ATS (38.9%) since 2010. Their average points allowed in the follow-up contest balloons to 20.2 PPG, a total that exceeds usual preseason standards by about 1.1 PPG.
System Matches (FADE ALL): BUFFALO (-3 vs PIT), BALTIMORE (-2.5 vs WAS), NY JETS (+3 vs NYG)
“37” is a magic number for totals
Since 2010 in the NFL preseason, the number 37 has proven to be quite the benchmark in terms of totals. Totals less than 37 have gone Over at a rate of 57.1% (321-241), and have gone 18-12 Over since the start of the 2025 preseason. Those closing totals of 37 or higher have gone Under at a 56.7% clip (581-444), including 16-8 to the Under this year.
System Matches (PLAY ALL): OVER (o/u <37) – PIT-BUF, NE-CLE, WAS-BAL, ATL-MIA, HOU-CAR, NYG-NYJ, TB-JAX, SEA-KC, CIN-PHI, ARI-GB, DET-IND, CHI-TEN
UNDER (o/u >= 37) – SF-LVR, LAR-LAC, NO-DAL, MIN-DEN
Teams that didn’t score well at all are good Over bets the next game
Struggling offenses tend to bounce back well in the next outing of the preseason, as teams that were held to fewer than 10 points in their previous preseason contest have gone 94-67-1 Over the total (58.4%) in the next game since 2010. These teams average 20 PPG in the next contest, while giving up 20.2.
System Matches (PLAY OVER ALL): PIT-BUF (o/u at 35.5), NE-CLE (o/u at 35.5), ATL-MIA (o/u at 36.5), NO-DAL (o/u at 38.5), MIN-DEN (o/u at 39.5), DET-IND (o/u at 35.5), CHI-TEN (o/u at 36.5)
*If you’re looking for a short-term ATS edge on these teams, they are also on a current 23-11-1 ATS (67.6%) surge heading into 2025.
System Matches (PLAY ALL): PITTSBURGH (+3 at BUF), CLEVELAND (+2.5 vs NE), MIAMI (+3.5 vs ATL), NEW ORLEANS (+1.5 at DAL), MINNESOTA (+6.5 at DEN), INDIANAPOLIS (-3.5 vs DET), CHICAGO (+2.5 at TEN)
Preseason games between conference opponents lean heavily Under
Interestingly, dating back to September 2015, preseason games between opponents from the same conference have trended heavily Under the total, going 74-47 Under (61.2%). Furthermore, if you add the qualifiers from #8 above to that time span, preseason games between conference opponents with totals of 37 or higher have gone Under at a 60-27 rate (69%) since September 2015!
System Matches (PLAY UNDER ALL): PIT-BUF (o/u at 35.5), NE-CLE (o/u at 35.5), NO-DAL (o/u at 38.5), ARI-GB (o/u at 35.5)
Teams that lost their first two games but are playing on the road in a competitive line range (-4.5 to +2.5) against non-conference opponents have gone 17-2 SU and 15-4 ATS (78.9%) since 2010.
System Matches (PLAY ALL): HOUSTON (-1.5 at CAR), SEATTLE (-2.5 at KC)
Teams that lost their first two games but are playing in the short favorite/pick ’em line range (-3.5 to PK) against non-conference opponents have seen their totals go Under at an 18-7-2 rate (72%) since 2010
System Matches (PLAY UNDER ALL): SEA-KC (SEA -2.5, o/u at 35.5), CIN-PHI (PHI -3, o/u at 36.5), HOU-CAR (HOU -1.5, o/u at 36.5)
Teams that won their first two games and are playing at home with a total of 37.5 or higher have seen the total go Under at a 26-11-2 rate (70.3%) since 2010
System Match (PLAY UNDER): NO-DAL (o/u at 38.5)

Here are the systems and qualifying plays for this week’s games as of 3:45 p.m. ET on Wednesday. NFLPS DK Betting Splits system #1: Since the start of the 2023 NFL preseason, majority handle bettors on sides have gone just 76-93 ATS (45%). Until proven otherwise, any August majority handle in the NFL should be faded.
System Match: FADE ALL MAJORITY HANDLES ON SIDES
NFLPS DK Betting Splits system #4: Since the start of 2023, when the majority handle backed either team in a preseason game that had a point spread with one team favored by 3.5 points or higher, that majority group has gone just 33-44 ATS (42.9%). This is a drop off from the 44.6% overall win rate in system #1, so worth further consideration.
System Matches (FADE ALL): SAN FRANCISCO, LA RAMS, ATLANTA, DENVER, INDIANAPOLIS
NFLPS DK Betting Splits system #5: Since the start of the 2023 preseason, when the majority of number of bets backed a team in a PS game with a point spread of 2.5 points or lower, that group has gone just 27-39 ATS (40.9%). Look to fade the majority number of bettors in expected tight games this month.

NFLPS DK Betting Splits system #6: Since the start of the 2023 preseason, when the majority number of bets was 59% or greater on any home team, that group has gone 28-35 ATS (44.4%).

NFLPS DK Betting Splits system #8: Since the start of the 2023 preseason, majority bets groups of over 60% on road teams have gone 27-16 ATS (62.8%), including a 7-0 ATS streak in 2026.
