Titans vs. Dolphins Analysis

This is going to be an ugly game to watch. This season, the Titans are 31st in the league in EPA per play (-0.216) and the Dolphins are just 30th (-0.215). Miami actually has an excuse for that. Tua Tagovailoa suffered another concussion in a Week 2 meeting with the Bills, and it’s not entirely clear when he’ll return. But it is abundantly clear that Miami isn’t built to succeed without him.

Skylar Thompson looked awful before getting hurt against Seattle last week, and Tim Boyle looked like…Tim Boyle. Tyler Huntley will be the next quarterback to get a shot at running Mike McDaniel’s offense. He offers some more hope under center, as he generally did a good job filling in for Lamar Jackson in Baltimore. At the very least, Huntley’s ability to make plays with his legs provides the Dolphins with something. I view him as a small upgrade over Thompson, and I think he’s capable of doing enough to help Miami get back in the win column.

I have the slightest of leans on Miami in this game. It really comes down to home-field advantage and a slight edge in coaching. I know that home-field advantage in the NFL is quickly vanishing, but I do think it’s a case-by-case situation. The Dolphins are 14-5 straight-up and 11-8 against the spread at home under McDaniel. And the reality is that 32 quarterbacks have a better Value vs. Average Starter than Will Levis this season, according to nfelo. He has been a nightmare since the start of the year, with his turnovers being a huge problem. I’m just not sure I see him getting himself back on track in a road game against a hungry opponent.

I also think defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, who was with the Ravens from 2021 to 2023, knows that he needs to put a lot of pressure on Levis. Tennessee’s offensive line has been a mess this season, as PFF has the Titans as the 31st-ranked offensive line so far. Miami’s secondary is also capable of holding up if Weaver is sending rushers at Levis regularly.

This is also a pretty reasonable matchup for McDaniel’s offense. Tennessee is a middle-of-the-pack defense against both the run and the pass. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if De’Von Achane bounces back from last week’s 11 carries for 30 yards. And if he does, Huntley should then have some opportunities to hit Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Titans vs. Dolphins Player Props

De’Von Achane Over 3.5 Receptions (+110)

Achane only had three receptions in last week’s loss against the Seahawks, but he was targeted five times. Achane also happened to have seven receptions in Week 1 and Week 2. It’s just clear that getting the ball to Achane in space is a huge priority for this Miami team, and I don’t see that changing with Huntley under center. McDaniel is going to want to build the quarterback’s confidence with some quick, easy completions.

We have also seen this Titans team struggle to cover running backs this season. In a Week 2 loss to New York, Tennessee allowed Breece Hall and Braelon Allen to combine for nine receptions out of the backfield. Hall had seven of those himself. I’m not quite sure I see Achane matching that mark, but five or so seems well within reason.

Titans vs. Dolphins Pick

Not only has Miami been reliable at home under McDaniel, but the Dolphins are also 18-5 SU and 14-9 ATS as favorites since he became the team’s head coach. Sure, things aren’t looking great without Tagovailoa under center, but look at the opponent here. The Titans look like one of the worst teams in football, and they haven’t proven that they can be trusted to go on the road and win a game like this.

Lean: Dolphins -1.5 (-108)
