The knockout stages are finally here, and we have two runners-up from the group stage facing off as Canada takes on South Africa in Los Angeles. Canada head into the match as deserved favorites, with both nations looking to reach the quarterfinals in what is their first-ever World Cup knockout match.
Canada was the more impressive of the two sides during the group stage. South Africa’s only victory came against a South Korea side that appeared content with a draw, knowing it would be enough to send them through. Canada, meanwhile, pushed Switzerland all the way, were wasteful in front of goal against Bosnia, and then comfortably dispatched a poor Qatar side to book their place in the last 16.
The trends also point towards a low-scoring game. Six of South Africa’s last seven matches have gone Under 2.5 goals, including all three of their World Cup fixtures. Canada has also been involved in low-scoring contests, with 10 of their last 13 matches finishing under the same line. With the stakes now even higher in the knockout rounds, I only see these games becoming tighter.
That’s why my favorite angle is Under 2.5 Goals. I don’t fully trust either attack to produce a high-scoring game, and the recent numbers back that up. Canada has scored more than twice just once in their last 13 matches, while South Africa has failed to score more than two goals in each of their last eight. Everything points towards another cagey encounter, making Under 2.5 Goals my best bet.
