Team USA moved on to the World Cup knockout round with a 2-0 victory over Australia.
But the even better news arrived late Friday night.
Paraguay beat Turkey 1-0 in the other Group D match, meaning the Americans have officially clinched first place in the group with one match still to play.
And first place matters.
If the knockout round started today, the USA’s path would begin with:
Round of 32: Bosnia
Round of 16: New Zealand or Czech Republic
Not exactly a gauntlet.
