🏀 NBA Playoffs: Now the East gets its turn
The West delivered immediately.
The Spurs stunned the Thunder 122-115 in double overtime, riding a monster performance from Victor Wembanyama (41 points, 24 rebounds) to steal Game 1 on the road.
Now the East takes center stage.
Cavs (+7.5) at Knicks, 8 ET (ABC).
And the biggest question tonight: rest vs. rust.
The Knicks haven’t played since May 10. The Cavaliers are coming off a Game 7 on Sunday.
According to Sportico’s Lev Akabas, teams with at least five days of rest vs. teams with one day off have gone 42-23 in Game 1s (+6.8 point differential) since 1984.

🧠 Zach Cohen’s NBA Report
If Game 1 of the Spurs-Thunder series was a sign of things to come, we’re in store for a legendary best-of-seven battle.
With De’Aaron Fox sidelined, and the Thunder coming off a full week of rest, there were plenty of reasons to doubt the Spurs (+6.5) in the opener. However, Oklahoma City was a little rusty out the gates, and Victor Wembanyama simply wasn’t going to let his team lose — even when the defending champions finally got themselves going.
Wembanyama played 49 minutes in Game 1, finishing with 41 points, 24 rebounds, and three blocks. That last number didn’t do his defense justice either. Chet Holmgren was visibly rattled by Wembanyama’s presence around the basket, and we even saw Shai Gilgeous-Alexander playing a little more passive.
Wembanyama also had memorable moment after memorable moment in this double overtime classic. The biggest one was a logo-ball that absolutely had to go down with 27 seconds remaining in the first overtime. Down 108-105, the Spurs were looking at a loss if Wembanyama didn’t hit a triple, and he calmly delivered with a deep one.
Let’s all hope there’s more of this to come.
