🏀 NBA Playoffs: Rust belt
If you had the Cavs +6.5, you were feeling good.

Cleveland led by 22 points with 7:40 left in the fourth quarter.

Then everything flipped.

The Knicks finally shook off the rust and closed on a stunning 44-11 run — including overtime — to win 115-104 in the East finals opener.

That’s one way to answer the rest vs. rust question.

Wednesday’s NBA menu:

Spurs (+6.5) at Thunder, 8:30 ET (NBC). Total: 215.5. SAS leads 1-0.

Knicks Stage Outrageous Comeback To Steal Game 1

With 7:40 to go in Game 1, Cleveland had a 93-71 lead over New York. The Cavaliers were getting whatever they wanted against an unorganized Knicks defense, plus Cleveland was everywhere defensively. The Cavaliers were well on their way to taking home-court advantage in the series…until they weren’t.

NBA teams were 3-747 when trailing by at least 20 points in the fourth quarter of a postseason game over the last 30 years. Well, not only did New York come back and make that record 4-747, but the team also covered as a 6.5-point favorite in overtime. It was a remarkable comeback for the Knicks, a brutal collapse for the Cavaliers, and an all-time bad beat for Cleveland backers.

How did it happen? A lot of fingers will be pointed at James Harden. Jalen Brunson picked on the veteran relentlessly, and The Beard just couldn’t keep New York’s star in front of him. However, Kenny Atkinson deserves a lot of blame for the soft-switching he allowed from his defense, and calling more than one timeout during the Knicks run wouldn’t have hurt. The Cavaliers also got lazy running their offense, with Donovan Mitchell disappearing down the stretch.

Where will things go from here? We’ll see. The Cavaliers were on the verge of a series-changing win. Instead, they suffered a gut-wrenching loss. Cleveland would have been better off losing by 50, chalking it up to New York’s rest advantage, and moving on to Game 2. Well, turning the page to Game 2 will be difficult now. Plus, the Cavaliers just had to play their best players 40 minutes after the quick turnaround from Game 7. The Knicks will continue to have the fresher legs.

Let’s Do It Again Wednesday

Through two games, these NBA Conference Finals are batting 1.000. We have seen two tremendous basketball games, and it’s entirely possible we’ll get a third on Wednesday. The Thunder will take the floor at the Paycom Center in desperation mode, as they can’t afford to go down 0-2 against the Spurs. That’s why Oklahoma City is once again favored by 6.5, despite clearly looking like the worse team in Game 1.

This is the Zig Zag spot of all Zig Zag spots, with the Thunder being asked to cover a big number against a team they’re 1-5 against on the season. I can’t wait to see how it plays out.

⛳ Byron Nelson: Playing the field
Scottie Scheffler’s presence in a non-major, non-signature event changes the math in the Byron Nelson.

Scheffler is the +168 favorite, so Wes Reynolds suggests looking at the “Without Scheffler” markets.
