⚽ Good To The Last Shot
Apparently, there aren’t going to be any rocking-chair bets in the World Cup knockout stage.

Monday’s Round of 32 tripleheader kept bettors sweating until the very end.

• Brazil (-310) avoided an upset with a goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to beat Japan 2-1.

• Paraguay (+455) stunned Germany on penalty kicks for the fourth-biggest upset in World Cup history.

• Morocco (+135) tied the score in stoppage time before eliminating the Netherlands on penalty kicks.

What does Tuesday have in store for bettors?

Today’s menu (Circa odds to advance):

1 p.m. ET
Ivory Coast (+155) vs. Norway (-180)

5 p.m. ET
France (-850) vs. Sweden (+600)

9 p.m. ET
Mexico (-185) vs. Ecuador (+160)

Alex Blowers expects fireworks between Ivory Coast and Norway.

“With both teams pressing high and attacking in transition, this has the makings of a chaotic, end-to-end game. Both sides are going to play to their strengths with the ball moving forward quickly, and that approach could leave space at the back for the other to exploit.”

Nigel Seeley’s Play of the Day comes from France vs. Sweden.

“Expect France, with the likes of an in-form Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé, both on four tournament goals, supplied by Michael Olise (three assists), to create a high volume of quality chances while forcing Sweden deeper and deeper into their own half.”

Nigel also explains why he prefers the Asian Handicap over the traditional moneyline in this matchup.

⚾ Steve Makinen’s New Pitching Metric
A reader question prompted Steve Makinen to explain one of the key numbers behind his bullpen betting systems: forecasted starter length.

The idea is simple. The longer a starting pitcher is expected to work, the fewer innings a bullpen has to cover—a critical factor when betting baseball.

Steve currently projects Yoshinobu Yamamoto to pitch the deepest into games at 6.50 innings. As a team, the Royals lead the majors at 5.76 innings per start, while the Rockies rank last at 4.78.

❤️ RIP Fats

I’ve met a lot of characters during my 10 years in Las Vegas. Few were bigger than Steve “Fats” Diano.

Fats’ death from cancer was announced Monday by his friend Gadoon “Spanky” Kyrollos.

We were all hoping he’d make it to August, when he was scheduled to be inducted into the Sports Gambling Hall of Fame inside Circa Sportsbook. His remarkable 40-year betting career included time with Billy Walters’ legendary Computer Group.

Based on every conversation I had with him, Fats genuinely loved the life he built as a professional sports bettor.

He also never passed up the chance to pose for a photo with a blonde.

One of those happened to be my light and love, Heather (see above).

Suffice to say, the Hall of Fame ceremony won’t be the same without him.

🏀 2 Ex-NBA Players Indicted In Gambling Scheme
Former NBA players Malik Beasley and Ed Davis, along with an NBA agent and three others, were indicted Monday on federal charges tied to an alleged sports gambling scheme involving at least four NBA games during the 2023-24 season.

One text message cited in the indictment from Davis to Beasley read: “Only way you can beat Vegas is sports betting.”
