Pistons vs. Cavaliers Prediction
The Cavaliers didn’t look great in their series win over the Raptors. Facing a Toronto team that didn’t have Immanuel Quickley the entire series, or Brandon Ingram for some of it, it shouldn’t have taken Cleveland seven games to advance. Kenny Atkinson just didn’t seem to know how he wanted to manage his rotation, the Cavaliers players lacked consistency, and the end result was a couple of rough showings on the road. However, despite all of that, it’s still hard to imagine Cleveland losing to a team that lacks firepower. Well, this Detroit team lacks firepower.
Cade Cunningham has proven himself as one of the best players on the planet, and he’s going to have his share of big games against the Cavaliers. However, Cunningham did average only 18.5 points per game on 34.2% shooting from the floor and 16.7% shooting from three in four meetings with Cleveland this season. The Cavaliers have some good answers for the All-Star, with Dean Wade and Jaylon Tyson being two guys that are happy to cover him. That’s going to be interesting to watch here. If Cunningham isn’t absolutely torching Cleveland, it’s going to be very hard for Detroit to win this series. And even if he is, he’s still going to need help. Where is that coming from?
Jalen Duren should be the guy that steps up and helps Cunningham, but he was lousy against Orlando in the opening round. Will he be any better here? Duren will surely have some good performances, but Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley should be able to do a decent job of containing him. Both players are excellent defensively around the basket.
It’s also hard to put much stock into what we saw from Tobias Harris against the Magic. The 33-year-old had 30 points on efficient shooting in Game 7, and he averaged 21.6 points per game for the Pistons in the series. But I don’t quite see him backing that up. As far as No. 2 options go, Harris is one of the weakest ones in the NBA when thinking about shot creation. He also struggled against the Cavaliers during the regular season, averaging 13.3 points per game on 39.4% shooting from the floor.
Considering all of that, it’s just hard to imagine Detroit beating a Cleveland team that has a number of high-quality scoring options. Say what you want about James Harden as a playoff performer, but he’s an elite pick-and-roll creator and a great isolation scorer. Donovan Mitchell is also as tough a cover as there is in this league when he’s rolling. Then, the Cavaliers have some great play finishers inside, plus Mobley offers more than just that.
I also like Cleveland’s role players and bench options, with Sam Merrill’s three-point shooting being a potential swing skill in this series. Merrill had some big games against Toronto, and his floor spacing really changed some of those contests. Don’t be surprised if he plays a big role in this best-of-seven set, as he can open things up for the Cavaliers on offense. And on defense, they really don’t need to worry as much about his on-ball play, as the Pistons don’t have great scoring options.
This is also a series in which three-point math will be important. I know the three-ball might not seem all that crucial with Boston having been bounced in the opening round, but you still can’t downplay the most important shot in the game. Well, the Cavaliers made 14.3 triples per game during the year, while the Pistons knocked down only 11.0 per game. That said, if Cleveland is hitting at a decent clip in the series, Detroit will be behind the eight ball.
Overall, I do think the Pistons’ tenacity will present some problems for the Cavaliers. Jensen Lewis, a die-hard Cleveland fan, told me that this Cavaliers team is soft. That’s not ideal going up against a team of pitbulls. But lack of consistent shot creation almost doomed Detroit against a miserable Orlando team. At some point, being at a talent deficiency hurts.
