Spurs vs. Thunder Game 2 Picks
I really like Oklahoma City to get back in the win column, with some clear adjustments helping the team get there. The first move Mark Daigneault needs to make is throwing Chet Holmgren on Victor Wembanyama. That will undoubtedly end in some viral moments, with Wembanyama being unguardable and Holmgren lacking the strength and quickness to slow him down. However, having Holmgren on Julian Champagnie is a no-go. Putting Holmgren on a legitimate three-point weapon means he has to guard away from the rim. So, not only does Wembanyama get to work against Alex Caruso around the basket, but he also gets to completely dominate the offensive glass.
The Thunder also just need to be more aggressive going to the rim. Wembanyama was altering everything that went up around the basket, and that’s what makes the 7-foot-4 alien special. However, Oklahoma City was too bothered by his presence. The Thunder were passing up good shots around the rim, smoking layups they’d normally make, and simply not running their usual offense. That can’t happen in this series. In fact, Oklahoma City needs to take the Minnesota approach of attacking the rim, no matter the outcome.
I expect to see a much better effort from the Thunder in Game 2, and I do think there’s a chance they win convincingly. However, even with the Zig Zag theory in play, I’m not rushing to lay 6.5 points in a series that has been so one-sided dating back to the regular season. I’ll just sit back and hope Oklahoma City wins outright, as I have the Thunder to win the NBA Finals.
As far as the props go, I’m taking Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to score at least eight points in the first quarter. It’s a high number for a player that has gone Under in the first 12 minutes in three straight games, but it was pretty clear that Gilgeous-Alexander was more comfortable attacking in the second half of Game 1. He started to go hard at the basket and was confident pulling up in the mid-range area. I expect to see that immediately in Game 2, and that’s especially true with his team’s back pressed hard against the wall.
I’m also taking Cason Wallace to go Over 11.5 combined points, rebounds, and assists (PRA). Wallace played 28 minutes in Game 1, finishing with 14 combined PRA in the game. He might not flirt with 30 minutes again tonight, but I do expect to see him as a real part of this rotation. With Isaiah Hartenstein being borderline unplayable for Oklahoma City, both Jared McCain and Wallace will have opportunities to prove their worth next to the Thunder starters. Well, I expect Wallace to be the one to separate himself. McCain is a dynamic three-point shooter, which definitely has value in this series. However, he’s also very easy to hunt on the defensive end. You can’t say the same about Wallace. The Thunder can use Wallace as a point-of-attack stopper on one of the Spurs guards, he’s a good rebounder for a backcourt player, and he’s another capable ball handler. Wallace is also a decent shooter, plus he can score in transition. I’ll take my chances with him finding a way to make an impact here.
Bet: Gilgeous-Alexander Over 7.5 First Quarter Points (-110)
Bet: Wallace Over 11.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists (+102)
