You could feel it Thursday inside Circa Sports.

The sportsbook was buzzing as football returned with the Hall of Fame Game, Bet Bash brought hundreds of sports bettors to Las Vegas and—because this is Vegas—the Miss Grand USA Bikini Contest was taking place simultaneously at Stadium Swim.

The Hall of Fame Game also served as an early reminder heading into football season: Pay attention to Steve Makinen’s betting trends.

Yesterday Steve noted that the Over had cashed in four consecutive Hall of Fame Games despite totals in the mid-30s.

Make it five in a row. Carolina’s 33-30 victory over Arizona easily cleared Thursday night’s total of 35.5. The Panthers covered the -1.5.

That’s not a recommendation to blindly chase trends. The value comes from understanding why a trend exists—and whether the same factors are still in play.

I also would note that Haynes King scrambled for the winning TD on the final play — one of Adam Burke’s handicapping angles that led him to pick the Panthers.

Week 1 of the preseason begins Thursday, and VSiN will have previews, best bets and betting trends throughout the week.

Greg Peterson expects a pitchers’ duel Friday in Philadelphia.

New Blue Jays starter Jose Soriano has historically been much better on the road, while Phillies ace Zack Wheeler enters with a 2.49 ERA and one of baseball’s best strikeout-to-walk ratios. Add in Toronto’s league-worst offense, and Greg expects runs to be at a premium.

Best Bet: Blue Jays vs. Phillies Under 8.5
Greg’s Projected Total: 7.9 runs
