Breaking News: Sugar Bowl scheduled for 4 p.m. ET Thursday

The Sugar Bowl is being postponed after a suspected terrorist attack in New Orleans early Wednesday.

Instead, the College Football Playoff quarterfinal between Georgia and Notre Dame will be played on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET.

The Irish flipped from 1-point underdogs to 1-point favorites earlier today.

Will CFP dogs bark at some point?

Penn State (-11/-11.5) continued the CFP run of favorites with a 31-14 victory over Boise State on New Year’s Eve.

Favorites are now 5-0 in the CFP. The Nittany Lions will play the Georgia-Notre Dame in the semifinals on Thursday, Jan. 9.

Now for the three quarterfinals . . .

Peach Bowl: Texas vs. Arizona State, 1 p.m. ET (ESPN)

Jonathan Von Tobel: Arizona State enters the CFP as the best cover team in the country. The Sun Devils are 11-2 ATS on the season with a +11.3 spread differential. But, this will be the program’s second game without receiver Jordyn Tyson, who leads the team in receptions (75), receiving yards (1,101) and receiving touchdowns (10). Arizona State fared well without Tyson in the Big 12 Championship Game, but the Peach Bowl will be a different test.

Rose Bowl: Ohio State vs. Oregon, 5 p.m. ET (ESPN)

JVT: Remember, Oregon closed as a 3.5-point underdog at home against Ohio State. If you use just a routine three points for homefield advantage that would give you a 6.5-point spread in favor of the Buckeyes on that day. Today, Ohio State is laying under a field goal.

Sugar Bowl: Notre Dame vs. Georgia, 4 p.m. ET on Thursday (ESPN)

JVT: Notre Dame ran for 193 yards against Indiana in the first round, but 98 of those yards came via a touchdown run in the first quarter from Jeremiah Love. On the 34 other attempts the Irish totaled 95 yards, which equates to 2.8 yards per carry. A stagnant offensive performance in one game does not define the Irish, but it is fair to wonder what this offense looks like on a neutral field setting against one of the best defenses in the country if that is all it could muster against a lesser opponent at home.

NFL favorites on record pace

This nugget caught my eye in David Purdum’s story on ESPN.com:

NFL betting favorites have won 183 games outright this season, five shy of the all-time mark set in 2005, with Week 18 pending. The favored team has won 71.8% of games entering the final week, the highest winning percentage for chalk since 2005 and second-best since the NFL adopted a 16-game schedule in 1978, according to ESPN Research.
