Mr. Ed’s Gulfstream Picks for Sunday, January 19:
TRACKING MR. ED: Into every race fan’s day, a little rain must fall. Unfortunately, for Mr. Ed, more than a little fell overnight at Gulfstream Park to slop up the main track. Turf races were moved to the synthetic surface. Several of his VSiN picks were scratched. And, for the most part, his horses who did run, did so slowly. Once the sun came out, it was too late to save his day. The day’s few highlights included Tyler Gaffalione with five. The average $2 Win ticket returned $12.05. As for Sunday, post time for the 10-race card is 12:20 p.m. ET. And remember, folks, change is the name of Mr. Ed’s game. Here are Sunday’s Gulfstream picks.
Mr. Ed’s Selections at Gulfstream for Sunday, January 19
Race 1 (12:20 p.m. ET/9:20 a.m. PT) — $94K MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT for 3YO fillies going 1 1/16-mile
Mr. Ed starts the day with a Daily Double. He likes #1 ILLUMINATRICE (4-1 morning line) for trainer Graham Motion and #8 SMUDGE (9-2) for Canadian conditioner Mark Casse. Both these guys know their way to the Winner’s Circle with talented youngsters.
GULFSTREAM PICK: $5 Daily Double of 1,8/1,3 ($20)
Race 2 (12:49 p.m. ET/9:49 a.m. PT) — $50K MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT for state-bred 3YOs going 5 ½ furlongs on synthetic surface
To complete the Daily Double, Mr. Ed likes #1 IRON HAND (3-1 morning line) with Eddie Gonzalez and #3 P FOUR (7-2) with Tyler Gaffalione. Top riders should be ahead of others at the finish line.
Race 3 (1:23 p.m. ET/10:23 a.m. PT) — $28K CLAIMING for 4YOs & up going 1 mile, 70 yards on synthetic surface
I like three for the money: #1 FREAKAZOID (2-1 morning), who knows how to close; #3 BEAN MACHINE (7-2), dropping in class; and #6 GEMSTONE WARRIOR (3-1), with Jersey Joe Bravo in the irons.
GULFSTREAM PICK: $5 Exacta Box of 1,3,6. ($30)
Race 5 (2:22 p.m. ET/11:22 a.m. PT) — $37K CLAIMING for 4YOs & up going 5½ furlongs on turf
Mr. Ed’s selection is #8 FOUR TOP (9-2 morning line). Trained by skillful Mike Maker, the colt turns back after two strong finishes going longer. Edgard Zayas retains the mount. I count on the colt to break well and beat the field to the wire.
GULFSTREAM PICK: $10 to Win. ($10)
Race 7 (3:20 p.m. ET/12:20 p.m. PT) — $30K OPTIONAL CLAIMING for 3YO fillies going 5 furlongs on the synthetic surface
Mr. Ed likes #3 EPISODE (7-2 morning line) for sharp trainer Bill Tharrenos, who picks up Tyler Gaffalione to ride first after the claim. If the gal breaks, she may never look back.
GULFSTREAM BEST BET: $20 to Win, $10 to Place. ($30)
Race 8 (3:50 p.m. ET/12:50 p.m. PT) — $41K CLAIMING for state-bred 4 YOs going 1 1/16-mile on synthetic surface
Mr. Ed likes #5 J P HELLISH (4-1 morning line) with Javier Castellano returning to the saddle. Speed puts the gelding in front early. Sports excellent record on the track.
GULFSTREAM PICK: $10 to Win & $5 Exacta Boxes with 3,7. ($30)
