France vs England | 2026 FIFA World Cup Third Place Playoff | Saturday, July 18 | 5PM ET | Hard Rock Stadium | Miami Gardens
France (-110) | Draw (+285) | England (+270)
Over 3.5 Goals (+110) | Under 3.5 Goals (-135)
France -0.5 (-115) | England +0.5 (-110)
France take on England in the most pointless and needless game in the world of sport. Both sides were one game from the pinnacle of their careers — a World Cup final — and now have to play out a Third Place Playoff that nobody cares about, in Miami’s heat and humidity no less.
That lack of motivation is the story from a betting perspective. Form, tactics and recent performances all take a backseat when neither team truly wants to be on the pitch. How each manager navigates that apathy — and who they can actually put out there — matters far more than anything that happened in the semifinals.
FRANCE AND ENGLAND TEAM NEWS
For all the reasons stated above, this is a crapshoot in terms of who starts. Nobody’s fully motivated, players who have been carrying knocks won’t risk aggravating them in a dead rubber and the available player pool will dictate how each manager sets up more than any tactical plans and shape we’ve seen at this tournament. Keep a close eye on lineups which are officially released 90 minutes before kickoff.

FRANCE VS ENGLAND MATCH BETTING ANALYSIS
The manner of each semifinal defeat matters. France were outplayed by a better Spain side — they went 1-0 down inside 20 minutes from a Lucas Digne mistake and never came close to turning it around. Although extremely disappointing considering their form coming into this game, there’s closure in that. It wasn’t your day, the better team won and the players and fans can move on.
England’s exit was the opposite and far more damaging psychologically. We were 1-0 up on 55 minutes and up to that point had edged the contest. Then we did what we’ve done too many times under pressure — retreated, sat deep, invited Argentina onto us and gave Lionel Messi the space he didn’t have in the first half. It’s unforgivable how we capitulated and Argentina’s patience and persistence were rewarded with two goals in the 85th and 92nd minutes.
The worst thing about this defeat is at halftime against Croatia in our opening game Tuchel told the players, “Even if we lose, let’s do it our way.” We responded brilliantly in the second half of that match, going on to win 4-2. To lose against Argentina in the manner we did was heartbreaking — we were nowhere close to doing it our way. After our goal, we had 12% possession which is pathetic considering the players we have and how the game was going before we scored.
I don’t think this is the kind of loss you bounce back from in 72 hours. Normally after a tournament exit there are differing opinions on what went wrong — tactical debates, unlucky moments, refereeing decisions. Not this time. The whole world is united on why England lost and that’s pretty damning. The UK media backlash has been relentless — calls for Tuchel to go, players being torn apart individually and the manner of the collapse being replayed on a loop. There’s no way the squad isn’t aware of it. It’s dominating every timeline and every back page. All questions leading up to this game will be about the Argentina defeat.
France have faced similar backlash back home, but Didier Deschamps is leaving after 14 years with Zinedine Zidane set to take over. It’s easier for Les Bleus to compartmentalize their defeat and they have had an extra day of rest to recover both physically and mentally from the disappointment. England’s squad will be carrying regret, public criticism and an emotional hangover that’s hard to shake for a game that already means nothing.
FRANCE VS ENGLAND BETTING PICK
Despite all the criticism Deschamps has faced over the years, he has built a genuine bond with this group of players. After 14 years in charge, he’s given all of them their debuts and integrated them into the national team setup. These relationships matter in a game like this where motivation is scarce. I think they’ll want to send him off with a victory.
We can’t ignore his relationship with Kylian Mbappé, his captain — it’s special. These two won the World Cup in 2018 and lost the 2022 final on penalties. This isn’t how either one would have wanted this to end but they have to make the best of what they have. Combine that with Mbappé’s pursuit of the Golden Boot and he has every reason to play with intent. He sits on eight goals and three assists in this tournament, level on goals with Lionel Messi who leads him on the assists tiebreaker. This is Mbappé’s last opportunity to retain the Golden Boot title he captured in 2022 and he’s not the type to pass up an opportunity to add to his legacy.
Looking at the squad depth of both sides, France’s is superior. Even with rotation and players sitting out, Deschamps can put out a side that looks like a legitimate international lineup. England’s bench doesn’t have that same quality in reserve, especially in defense.
I’m building a Same Game Parlay around France’s superiority in this spot. France on the Moneyline at -110 paired with France over 1.5 Team Goals at -191 gives us +110. A motivated Mbappé chasing the Golden Boot against an emotionally depleted England side should produce goals. Back France to claim Third Place and their captain to get on the scoresheet at -145.
That mental and squad depth gap is real, and it favors France who enter the Zizou era after this game.
