On Thursday, July 9, we’ll see an awesome semi-final showdown between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova in the 2026 Wimbledon Championships. I’m dropping my favorite play for this match below, but make sure you also monitor the picks page. I usually have a few more picks over there, plus I occasionally add plays based on the way lines are moving. That’s also where Gill Alexander posts his bets.

Coco Gauff vs. Karolina Muchova
This was one of the most lopsided head-to-head rivalries on tour heading into a meeting in the Stuttgart quarterfinals. Prior to that match, Gauff had won six consecutive times against Muchova, and the most recent matchup was one in which the American earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the Miami Open. However, Muchova was able to flip the script on clay, earning a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory. The Czech star should now enter this match with a bit of a clearer mind, meaning this match should be more about the tennis and less about the voices in her head. Well, when diving into the on-court stuff, Muchova looks like the right play.
Gauff has been super impressive throughout the course of this tournament. She has well-documented struggles when it comes to her serve and forehand, but she has ramped up her aggressiveness and found ways to play through that. With the serve, she’s going bigger and bigger, opting for less of the slower kick serves we have seen from her in the past. That has made her a little tougher to break, even if she has seen a slight uptick in double faults again. Meanwhile, there’s some Shaquille O’Neal in the Gauff forehand. For the most part, that wing is capable of being completely broken down, but she has been finding it when it matters most. That’s something Shaq always said about his free throw shooting. In the biggest games of his career, or in some key moments, he claimed he made them when they mattered. And while that’s not something that’s backed up by actual numbers, I like the idea of “making them when they count.” Gauff seems like she does.
The issue with Gauff is that the problems still exist. She might be able to slap some bandaids over them here and there, but she still has work to do when it comes to her mechanics. She’s working hard at that with her team, but there will be blips here and there. And those blips can be costly, which is especially true against an opponent like this.
Muchova just doesn’t have many holes in her game. In fact, as of June 29, Tennis Abstract had a 2026 Elo Rating of 2088.3 for Muchova, while Gauff’s was down at 2006.3. That’s an overall catch-all number that suggests Muchova has been a better player in 2026.
Muchova’s edge as a server is very real. Muchova has a 77.4% hold rate in 2026, and Gauff’s hold rate is down at 65.7%. It’s hard to win big tennis matches when your serve is this shaky, and Muchova is going to be ultra aggressive in attacking as a returner. Muchova also has plenty of other things working in her favor, like her ability to change up the pace of her baseline balls, mix in slices, and approach the net with her elite transition game.
Muchova is also going to test the forehand. Perhaps Gauff will have it going from that wing, as she did towards the end of her wins over Belinda Bencic and Jessica Pegula. But smart players will attack weaknesses, even when they appear to be improved. Muchova would be foolish not to at least see if Gauff is spraying errors from that side of the court, or sending short, punishable balls into the box.
Muchova has also been knocking on the door of a Grand Slam title forever, and she’s so close she can taste it. How fitting would it be for her to get the job done at Wimbledon? People have been making Roger Federer comparisons with her for a very long time, as she has an aesthetically pleasing game. Well, Federer was the best version of himself at the All England Club.
One last thing: Muchova looks like the sharp side here. Our VSiN betting splits show that Gauff opened at -110 to win this match. However, despite the fact that 75% of the tickets and money have come in on the American, Gauff is now available at plus-money odds. That means there’s some smart money on Muchova, as that’s some legitimate Reverse Line Movement.
Bet: Muchova ML (-118 – 1.5 units)
