🏀 The trend got even more ridiculous
The underdog Knicks (+4.5/+5) opened the NBA Finals with a 105-95 victory over the Spurs on Wednesday night.
That was a positive result for the two Steve Makinen trends we featured in Wednesday’s newsletter.
The NBA Finals outright-winner trend improved to 63-3-3 ATS (95.5%) over the last 11 seasons.
The trend is now so extreme that Steve has called it “ridiculous” and unlike anything he’s seen in any sport.
The second trend delivered as well. Finals games have now gone 30-13-1 Under (69.8%) over the last 44 contests after Wednesday’s game stayed comfortably below the total.

Friday’s Game 2 line: Spurs -5.5 at DraftKings and -6 at Circa, with a lower total of 214.5/213.5.

🏀 Zach Cohen’s NBA Report
With 6:31 remaining in the third quarter, San Antonio led 65-51 and appeared ready to seize control of Game 1.
Then the Knicks did what they’ve done throughout these playoffs: they refused to go away.
By the end of the quarter, the game was tied. By the end of the night, New York had stolen home-court advantage.
Jalen Brunson scored 13 fourth-quarter points, Karl-Anthony Towns battled Victor Wembanyama to a draw, and the Knicks improved their winning streak to 12 games.
Previewing Game 2, here are two things I’m already thinking about: Wembanyama’s usage and Dylan Harper’s minutes.
Mitch Johnson needs to find a way to get Wembanyama some easier buckets. He also has to figure out a way to keep Harper on the floor. The rookie had 16 points and eight boards in 28 minutes of action, and it was clear he was their best player on Wednesday. But Johnson went away from him late in the game, opting to play a struggling De’Aaron Fox alongside Stephon Castle. Harper might need to close games moving forward.
