Switzerland vs Colombia | 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 | Tuesday, July 7 | 4 p.m. ET | BC Place | Vancouver
Switzerland (+240) | Draw (+210) | Colombia (+130)
Over 2.5 Goals (+135) | Under 2.5 Goals (-170)
Switzerland +0.5 (-155) | Colombia -0.5 (+125)
Two of the most in-form sides at this World Cup meet in Vancouver on Tuesday to close out the Round of 16. Switzerland are riding a run of three straight tournament victories, while Colombia are unbeaten across all four of their matches in the competition so far.
Switzerland cruised past Algeria 2-0 in the Round of 32 at BC Place Vancouver, with Breel Embolo (10′) and Dan Ndoye (46′) scoring early in each half to send Murat Yakin’s side into the Round of 16 for a fourth consecutive World Cup. The Swiss were never troubled against an Algeria side managed by former Switzerland boss Vladimir Petkovic, extending their run to three successive World Cup wins for the first time in the nation’s history.
Colombia extended their unbeaten World Cup run to four matches with a controlled 1-0 Round of 32 win over Ghana at Kansas City Stadium, Jhon Arias’s 14th-minute finish the difference after substitute Luis Suárez found him unmarked at the back post. Néstor Lorenzo’s side, who topped Group K ahead of Portugal, should have won by more but were denied by a marginal offside call and a brilliant Ati-Zigi save, while restricting Ghana to no shots on target.
Neither side has shown any sign of vulnerability so far, and with a potential quarterfinal date with Argentina on the horizon, the winner in Vancouver will relish the opportunity to dethrone the reigning champions.
SWITZERLAND TEAM NEWS
Switzerland’s only injury concern is Luca Jaquez, who experienced hip discomfort in the build-up to the match with Algeria and wasn’t named in the squad. He’s expected to be available for this game and will likely be named among the substitutes.
Twenty-year-old Johan Manzambi’s aggressive, high-energy box-to-box performances have earned him a starting place in Switzerland’s last two games and attention from Europe’s biggest clubs. He has repaid Murat Yakin’s faith with a goal and two assists against Canada and Algeria.

COLOMBIA TEAM NEWS
Jhon Córdoba got the nod ahead of Luis Suárez to lead the line against Ghana. The veteran forward pulled up with what looked to be a serious thigh injury and was replaced after eight minutes. I’d be surprised if he’s available for this game, meaning Suárez will continue up front.
That will likely be the only change Lorenzo makes to his starting lineup. Goalscoring hero Arias and substitute Richard Ríos both picked up a yellow card. Another one before the semifinal will see them suspended for a game.

MATCH BREAKDOWN
In my Colombia vs. Ghana Preview, I highlighted how Los Cafeteros were clearly the best side in Group K, topping a group containing Portugal while conceding just once across three matches. Their wide players—Luis Díaz on the left and Daniel Muñoz overlapping at right back—have been two of the most dangerous attacking threats at this tournament, while James Rodríguez has rolled back the years in the No. 10 role. Colombia delivered exactly the kind of controlled performance I expected against Ghana in their 1-0 victory, and the only surprise is they didn’t win by more.
Néstor Lorenzo’s side dominated from kickoff and broke through on 14 minutes when Suárez found Arias at the back post. Ghana needed to reply but couldn’t, mustering just eight shots—all from outside the box bar two—totaling 0.27 xG with none hitting the target, and managing only eight touches inside Colombia’s box. Colombia turned their 61% possession into 20 shots totaling 2.04 xG and 19 touches inside Ghana’s box. Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi earned a 9.4-rated performance from Sofascore, pulling off seven saves to keep his side in the game.
Now they face a Switzerland side whose numbers deserve closer scrutiny. Switzerland’s attacking numbers look impressive—nine goals, 15 big chances from 56 shots totaling 8.82 xG—until you consider who it came against. They had one of the easiest groups in the tournament—Qatar, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada—before facing Algeria in the Round of 32. Defensively, the picture is worse: one clean sheet, six big chances conceded and 3.23 xG allowed against opposition of that caliber. Those numbers should be significantly lower given who they’ve faced. Switzerland simply haven’t been tested yet and are coming up against a dangerous Colombia side who have caused big problems for better defenses.
Seventy-nine shots tell you the chance creation has been relentless, but the finishing has been disappointing with only five goals to show for it. To their credit, Portugal’s Diogo Costa was as impressive as Ati-Zigi, making six saves. Colombia’s low average xG per shot (0.08) is a product of facing low-block defenses that restricted them to attempts from distance—but the volume and intent have been there every game.
Where Colombia really separates themselves is defensively. Three clean sheets, one goal conceded, just three big chances allowed and 0.07 xG per shot against. They’re simply not giving up high-quality chances, and they did it against better opposition than anything Switzerland have seen.
Colombia topped a group containing Portugal. Switzerland topped a group containing Canada. Those are not the same thing.
THE BET
Colombia are plus money to beat a Switzerland side that hasn’t faced anyone close to this level. The numbers tell you everything—Colombia have been better defensively against better opposition, and their chance creation has been relentless even though their finishing hasn’t been clinical.
Pundits are talking about this side reaching the semifinals, and yet you can still get them at +130 to win a Round of 16 game. At that price, you’re getting a side that topped a group containing Portugal, has conceded once in four games and is restricting opponents to an average of 0.07 xG per shot. That’s the best value on the board.
Pick: Colombia Moneyline +130
