Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks:

The Arizona Diamondbacks find themselves in the heat of the National League West face, entering Tuesday 3.5 games out of first place. They get to host the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, who are in last place in the division.

A key to Arizona’s success has been top-to-bottom hitting in the lineup. The team entered Tuesday as the number one team in baseball in runs per game at home with 5.4 while ranking 17th in home runs per game at home.

Rockies starting pitcher Tanner Gordon will look to slow down the Diamondbacks’ offense. He has allowed at least four runs in three of his five starts this season with a 6.15 ERA with 2.4 home runs per nine innings allowed.

The bullpen behind Gordon also has not been of help, supplying a 5.65 ERA, which is last in the league by a wide margin. No other team’s bullpen has above a 5.03 ERA entering Tuesday.

Arizona is 23rd in bullpen ERA at 4.21. They turn to Jordan Montgomery for a good start.

The 2024 season has not been kind to Montgomery. He has recorded a 6.39 ERA with only 5.9 strikeouts and 3.5 walks per nine innings.

If there is a bright spot for Montgomery, it is that he faces a Rockies team whose batting average dips from .272 at home to .220 on the road and is generating only 3.6 runs per game on the road this season.

Montgomery’s problem is that his ERA shoots up to 8.14 at home. With the Diamondbacks leading the league in runs per game at home while both bullpens have struggled all season, Wednesday’s game has the makings of a slugfest.
