Best Bets on Today’s MLB Player Props Market
The 2023 MLB season is underway and VSiN has you covered with every way you can possibly bet on a baseball game. As always, Adam Burke will have daily best bets to give you some ideas of what to back when it comes to moneylines, run lines and totals. However, I’m tackling player props here, and I’m targeting Shohei Ohtani and Josiah Gray on Thursday, July 27th. Keep reading to find out how I’m betting on both of them.

Here are our favorite MLB prop bets for Thursday, July 27th:
Los Angeles Angels (-145, 8.5) at Detroit Tigers
The Angels have decided not to trade Shohei Ohtani. Instead, they went out and acquired Lucas Giolito from the Chicago White Sox, and apparently they’re not done yet either. This Los Angeles team is now all in on making the postseason and trying to find a way to keep Ohtani happy. And this new direction all starts with the two-way superstar getting to face the Tigers today.
I investigated Ohtani’s pitcher props for this game, as the righty will be on the mound for Los Angeles in this one. But I love the value on Ohtani to come away with Over 1.5 total bases — especially at plus-money odds. Detroit is sending Michael Lorenzen to the hill in this game, and this is a matchup that I think Ohtani can take advantage of. Lorenzen has been good for the Tigers this season, but Ohtani is batting .317 with six triples, 12 doubles and 27 homers against right-handed pitching this season. Now, Ohtani gets to face a starter that isn’t anything special, so I’m backing him to help his own cause.
I’d be surprised if Ohtani doesn’t come away with at least an extra base hit in this game, but I can also see him going yard.
Bet: Ohtani Over 1.5 Total Bases (+115)
Washington Nationals at New York Mets (-215, 9)
Josiah Gray has only six strikeouts over his last two starts, but I’m not too concerned about that. The righty cruised in his last outing, pitching 7.0 innings of one-run ball in a win over the San Francisco Giants. Now, he faces a New York offense that he dominated back on April 25th. In that outing, Gray pitched 6.0 innings of shutout ball and struck out nine batters. With that in mind, I like his chances of getting to five strikeouts here.
Gray has had at least five strikeouts in 11 of his 20 starts this season, so this is a mark he reaches more often than not. So, the fact that you’re getting this at +115 odds seems like something of a gift from the oddsmakers. Of course, there’s no such thing as a gift when it comes to betting baseball, so maybe this is the trap of the century. But I’m playing it based on the value alone.
Bet: Gray Over 4.5 Strikeouts (+115)
