Derrick Henry’s injury and what it means for the Titans odds

279

Injuries are always a major story in the NFL, but it certainly feels like we’ve had a lot more key players go down this season than in past seasons. You can add Derrick Henry to that list, as the Tennessee Titans running back suffered a foot injury that will require surgery and keep him out of action for an indefinite period of time.

The injury is not believed to be season-ending for Henry, who could benefit from Week 18 being added to the schedule if the timetable ends up being around eight weeks. Sportsbooks scrambled to adjust Sunday’s line against the Los Angeles Rams, but paid little attention to the futures odds for the AFC South, the conference and the Super Bowl.

The Titans have the AFC's best record at 6-2. The Bills, Ravens and Raiders are all 5-2. The Chiefs are struggling and the Chargers just suffered another setback in the loss to the Patriots, so the books didn't have a whole lot of adjustments to make.

Henry’s injury is obviously a significant loss to the top-ranked rushing offense, but keep in mind that the Titans now hold a three-game edge over the Colts in the AFC South. Tennessee has also won both head-to-head meetings, so the Titans hold that first tiebreaker as well. The Jaguars are 1-6 and the Texans are 1-7, so neither team is a threat.

The Titans are still priced at -2000 per DraftKings Sportsbook to win the division with that big lead. The Colts are %plussign% 1000. The other teams are 200/1.

Tennessee remained the fourth choice to win the AFC at 7/1 early Monday afternoon. That could change when we get a more accurate timetable after Tuesday’s surgery for Henry. The Titans were the ninth choice to win the Super Bowl at 16/1. That is a price that could go lower, but the Titans are still very likely to make the playoffs and are seemingly likely to get Henry back.

In the near-term, here are Gill Alexander and Jeff Parles from A Numbers Game talking about the impact for this week’s Titans vs. Rams game.
